[Calcium desorption from the cornea while using complex-forming substances].

The time course of calcium desorption from the eye cornea and the efficacy of the use of complex-forming substances during desorption were examined. Experiments with labeled calcium showed an active absorption of the ions by the normal cornea thereby making it turbid. The removal of labeled calcium from an isolated eye and from corneal pieces while using a combination of complex-forming substances and diffusion facilitating-papain was accompanied by the lowering of tissue turbidity. Application of such combinations might eliminate, in some cases, the necessity of surgical operations on the cornea.

[Labilization of lysosomal and peroxisomal membranes in the kidneys preserved by transrenal gas perfusion].

The total, free and unprecipitated activity of lysosomal (acid DNAase, acid RNAase, acid phosphate, acid beta-galactosidase) and peroxisomal (catalase, oxidase of D-amino acids) enzymes were studied in dog kidney cortex during storage of the tissues in solution of rheopolyglucin and under conservation of the kidney tissue by transrenal gas perfusion in hypothermia within 3 and 7 days. Labilization of lysosomal and peroxisomal membranes was observed during storage both in unperfused and in oxygenated kidney. Mechanisms of formation and functional significance of the alterations observed in structure of lysosomes and peroxisomes are discussed.

[Clinical significance of determining ceruloplasmin activity in the blood serum in children with uveitis].

The activity of ceruloplasmin, the principal blood serum endogenous protein antioxidant, may serve the criterion of uveitis severity and time course. Reduction of this parameter in chronic recurring uveitis gives grounds to prescribe antioxidant therapy. The treatment efficacy is assessed by measuring the ceruloplasmin activity over the course of treatment.

[Cyclic nucleotides in experimental uveitis].

Content of cyclic nucleoside monophosphates was decreased in all the eye tissues in experimental toxico-allergic uveitis as well as penetration of cAMP into the fluid of anterior chamber of the eye. In various eye departments a dissimilar decrease of cyclic nucleotides occurred that had to be taken into consideration in a medicine prescription.

[The role of activation of polymorphic nuclear leukocytes in the development of experimental uveitis].

Increase in functional activity of blood polymorphonuclear leukocytes and in the rate of lipid peroxidation in eye tissues was found in rabbits with experimental uveitis. preadministration of antioxidants pipolphen and ionol led to considerable improvement of the uveitis clinics, to inhibition of lipid peroxidation in eye tissues and to decrease of the leukocytes in circulation.

[Glutathione:dehydroascorbate oxidoreductase activity in rabbit eye tissues].

Glutathione: dehydroascorbate oxidoreductase was detected in rabbit eye tissues, activity of which was decreased as compared with that of glutathione reductase. The ratio between glutathione reductase activity and the total activity of the enzymes catalyzing glutathione oxidation (glutathione: dehydroascorbate oxidoreductase and glutathione: H2O2 peroxidase) was above one unit in cornea, ciliary body, sclera vascular tunic and iris of the eye; it was lower than one unit in vitreous body, lens, optic nerve and aqueous humor. Glutathione: dehydroascorbate oxidoreductase is one of the key component in the eye antioxidative system; it regulates the ratio of oxidized and reduced forms of ascorbic acid and glutathione.

[Role of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the activation of lipid peroxidation in uveitis (experimental study)].

Activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PL) involving in the occurrence of inflammation results in inflammatory area accumulation of cytotoxic products, such as lipid peroxidation (LPO) initiators, which in turn may cause an increase and extent of inflammation. The regularities of changes in the functional activity of PL and plasma LPO parameters in the rabbit plasma and ocular tissue in the course of experimental toxic and allergic uveitis are studied. The level of the functional activity of PL, which was determined by luminol-dependent chemiluminescence was shown to correlate with the degree of uveitis. The peak was on days 3-7 and coincided with that of inflammatory changes in ocular tissues. Measurements of the plasma levels of PLO products, tocopherol (T), the activity of ceruloplasmin and total plasma antioxidative activity (AOA) led to the conclusion that there was a exhaustion of the antioxidative system and a drastic LPO activity on days 7 of uveitis. At the same time there were increased PLO products, decreased T levels and lower activity of superoxide dismutase in the ocular tissue. The use of antioxidants dibunol and pipolfen alleviated uveitis, reduced PL functional activity, normalized the ocular tissue and plasma levels of LPO products and enhanced the total plasma AOA. The fact that there is a close correlation between the level of the functional activity of PL, the degree of PLO activation in the plasma and ocular tissue has led to the conclusion that PL activation along with high functional activity is one of the main causes of enhanced PLO in uveitis.
