[Lectins and recognition of protein ligands].

The general principles of protein-carbohydrate lectin interactions were discussed. Experimental evidences of the molecular mimicry between carbohydrate and protein lectin ligands were analyzed. The interdomain interactions in lectins as well as the interactions between ligands and lectin domains other than carbohydrate-binding domains were considered.

[A quantitative method for determining lectin activity on microplates].

A modification of a known quantitative solidphase microtiter plate lectin assay elaborated by Hatakeyama and coauthors developed with biotinylated lectins and ExtrAvidin--alkaline phosphatase conjugate was proposed. The modification was performed in order to use a broad spectra of lectin ligands, including glycopeptides, peptides, etc. The optimal concentrations of the reagents and time of the reagents incubation were selected. Being known from the literature Kdiss for Concanavalin A and monosaccharides: methyl-Man, Man, Glc and Gal were determined in a model experiments. The results were in agreement with the range of monosaccharides specificity for the Concanavalin A. The modification described is relatively simple and sensitive.

[Interaction of certain RNAases and mannose-specific lectins].

While defining and elaborating the approaches to examination of the interaction between C-mannosylated tryptophan, recently discovered in the laboratory of Dr. Jan Hofsteenge, and Man/Glc specific lectins the unexpected results were obtained. Some animal origin mannosyl-containing RNases (as was expected) as well as analogous but nonglycosylated recombinant proteins expressed in E. coli (a negative control) were recognized by the mentioned lectins. Protein-protein interactions between lectins and expressed in E. coli nonglycosylated RNases are supposed and require further investigations.

[Coagulation factors and fibrinolytic system in subretinal liquid in patients with rheumatogenous retinal detachment].

The work deals with estimation of some factors of blood coagulation and fibrinolytic systems, which include antithrombin III, factor X, prothrombin, plasminogen, protein C concentrations in the subretinal fluid of the patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment retina. The tendency to increase of the blood coagulation and fibrinolysis factor levels, except protein C, was revealed in the patients with complicated forms of the disease. The investigations mentioned above are capable of serving as a diagnostical and forecasting test characterizing the rhegmatogenous retinal detachment retina and surgical treatment proceeding.

[The effect of the lectin from Sambucus nigra inflorescences on spontaneous and alkylating agent-induced mutagenesis in mammalian somatic cells].

Data on separation of purified galactose-specific lectin as well as its two polypeptide chains from inflorescences of European elder Sambucus nigra are represented. Their molecule quaternary structure after the pattern a2 b2 is suggested. It was shown that purified protein in concentration 2.0 mg/ml had mutagenic activity and might enhance mutagenic effect of alkylating substance MNNG. Thus, preparations of lectin from inflorescences of European elder influenced on spontaneous and induced by the alkylating agent mutagenicity in mammalian somatic cells in vitro.
