Ultrasound assessment of angiogenesis in a matrigel model in rats.

Matrigel, a basement membrane extract, has been extensively used in in vivo angiogenesis. Contrast ultrasound imaging (CUI) of implanted Matrigel plugs with (+bFGF) and without basic fibroblast growth factor (-bFGF) was performed 7 and 14 d after implantation, followed by histologic analysis. Statistically significant differences between +bFGF and -bFGF plugs were apparent at d 7 in both plug size and contrast enhancement (both p < 0.05). Histopathology revealed differences in microvessel density (MVD) between +bFGF and -bFGF at d 7 and d 14. A significant correlation between MVD and both power Doppler contrast-enhanced area (r = 0.65, p < 0.05) and fraction of plug enhanced (r = 0.59, p < 0.05) was present. CUI of Matrigel plugs was shown to be a robust method for distinguishing between two different angiogenic states. Ultrasound measurements of blood flow in the plugs correlated with MVD, a histologic technique used to quantify tumor angiogenesis.

Identification of a novel hemotropic mycoplasma in a splenectomized dog with hemic neoplasia.

A 3-year-old sexually intact male Bull Mastiff underwent splenectomy for splenic thrombosis; prior to and after splenectomy, multiple blood transfusions were administered. Two weeks after the procedure, T-cell lymphoproliferative disease was diagnosed. Treatment with prednisone and chlorambucil was initiated, and 2 weeks later, cytologic examination of a blood smear revealed small (0.3 microm), coccoid basophilic bodies on the surface of approximately 70% of the RBCs. Morphologically, these resembled "Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum." A polymerase chain reaction assay was used to amplify a partial 16S rRNA sequence in blood obtained from the dog; the product was sequenced and compared with 16S rRNA gene sequences of other hemotropic mycoplasmas. The sequence was 98% homologous to that of "Candidatus M haemominutum", but only 77% homologous to that of M haemocanis and M haemofelis.

Linear osteochondromatosis in a cat.

A domestic shorthair cat was presented with quadriparesis and lumbar hyperesthesia that progressed over 4 months. There were linear and amorphous radiopaque masses throughout the soft tissue surrounding the long bones, vertebral bodies, ribs, pelvis, and scapula. The diagnosis of osteochondromatosis was confirmed by histopathology. Unlike previously reported patients with osteochondromatosis, most of the calcified masses in this cat were not connected to the periosteum; some were linear and were arranged parallel to the long bones involved.
