In-training examinations.

In-training are one way to evaluate the residents during their training. Currently, the American Board of Podiatric Surgery supplies the examination. Various residency directors were questioned regarding its use and importance.

Curvature-dependent metastability of the solid phase and the freezing-melting hysteresis in pores.

We recapitulate and generalize the concept of the freezing-melting hysteresis that attributes this phenomenon to a free-energy barrier between metastable and stable states of pore-filling material. In a phenomenological description, we show that under commonly encountered conditions, this renders the freezing-point depression DeltaTf defined by the surface-to-volume ratio S/V, whereas the melting-point depression DeltaTm, by the mean curvature kappa of the pore surface, with DeltaTm/DeltaTf =2kappa(V/S). Employing 1H NMR cryoporometry, we experimentally demonstrate the linear correlation between DeltaTm and DeltaTf for several liquids with different DeltaTf,m imbibed in controlled pore glasses. The results compare favorably to the morphological properties of the glasses determined by other techniques. Our findings suggest a simple method for analyzing the pore morphology from the observed phase transition temperatures.

Pore size distributions of biodegradable polymer microparticles in aqueous environments measured by NMR cryoporometry.

NMR cryoporometry is a unique method permitting the investigation of pores in the microporous and mesoporous regimes for samples in aqueous environments. Here, we apply the technique to porous biodegradable polymer microparticles designed as devices for drug delivery in depot formulations. The results indicate that structural features too small to be captured in surface and fracture images obtained by SEM are able to be accessed using the technique, and that the evolution of pore structure can be studied for several days as the particles swell and degrade in the aqueous environment.

Dynamics of chloromethanes in cryptophane-E inclusion complexes: a 2H solid-state NMR and X-ray diffraction study.

In this paper, we present a variable temperature (2)H solid-state NMR investigation of cryptophane-E:chloroform and cryptophane-E:dichloromethane inclusion complexes. The (2)H line shapes and nuclear spin relaxation rates were analyzed in terms of the distribution of C-D bond orientations and the time scale of the guest dynamics. It was found that encaged chloroform produces broad (2)H spectra, and that its reorientation is relatively slow with a correlation time of approximately 0.17 mus at 292 K. In contrast, the (2)H line shapes of encaged dichloromethane are narrow and the motion of this guest molecule is fast with a correlation time of approximately 1.4 ps at 283 K. The (2)H NMR data were complemented by an X-ray diffraction study of the cryptophane-E:dichloromethane structure, which was utilized in the analysis of the NMR parameters.
