Formosa agariphila sp. nov., a budding bacterium of the family Flavobacteriaceae isolated from marine environments, and emended description of the genus Formosa.

Two marine, heterotrophic, aerobic, yellow-pigmented, agarolytic bacterial strains that are motile by means of gliding were isolated from the green alga Acrosiphonia sonderi and from sea water. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed an affiliation between the strains studied and the genus Formosa, a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae. The level of sequence similarity between strain KMM 3901T and Formosa algae KMM 3553T was 99.1 %. The results of DNA-DNA hybridization experiments and phenotypic analysis indicated that the strains represent a novel species of the genus Formosa, for which the name Formosa agariphila sp. nov. is proposed, with KMM 3901T (= KCTC 12365T = LMG 23005T = DSM 15362T) as the type strain. The description of the genus Formosa is emended with newly obtained data.

Larkinella insperata gen. nov., sp. nov., a bacterium of the phylum 'Bacteroidetes' isolated from water of a steam generator.

A Gram-negative bacterium, designated strain LMG 22510T, was isolated from water of a pharmaceutical company steam generator. The cells had a ring-like and horseshoe-shaped morphology and possessed gliding motility. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the strain was a member of the Flexibacter group within the phylum 'Bacteroidetes'; its nearest neighbour was Spirosoma linguale (88.8 % sequence similarity). DNA base content, fatty acid composition and biochemical characteristics were determined. Genotypic and phenotypic data indicated that strain LMG 22510T could not be assigned to any recognized genus; therefore, a novel genus and species is proposed, Larkinella insperata gen. nov., sp. nov., with LMG 22510T (= NCIMB 14103T) as the type strain.

Aquimarina intermedia sp. nov., reclassification of Stanierella latercula (Lewin 1969) as Aquimarina latercula comb. nov. and Gaetbulimicrobium brevivitae Yoon et al. 2006 as Aquimarina brevivitae comb. nov. and emended description of the genus Aquimarina.

A heterotrophic, aerobic, Gram-negative, pigmented and gliding bacterium, strain KMM 6258(T), was isolated from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius and investigated using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the closest relatives of the novel strain are Aquimarina muelleri, Stanierella latercula and Gaetbulimicrobium brevivitae, members of the family Flavobacteriaceae, with sequence similarities of 96.3, 96.4 and 96.2 %, respectively. Analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence, retrieved from the whole-genome sequence, showed that the bacterium was closely related to members of the genus Leeuwenhoekiella within the family Flavobacteriaceae, phylum Bacteroidetes. Phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses supported the creation of a novel species to accommodate this bacterium, for which the name Leeuwenhoekiella blandensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MED 217(T) (=CECT 7118(T)=CCUG 51940(T)).

Mariniflexile gromovii gen. nov., sp. nov., a gliding bacterium isolated from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius.

A marine bacterium, designated strain KMM 6038(T), was subjected to taxonomic analysis via a polyphasic approach. Cells of the strain were heterotrophic, orange-pigmented, Gram-negative and motile by means of gliding. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain KMM 6038(T) was closely related to the type species of the genera Algibacter and Yeosuana, members of the family Flavobacteriaceae, with sequence similarities of 93.8 and 93.6 % to the respective type strains. However, several chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics, such as the cellular fatty acid profile (iso-C(15 : 0), anteiso-C(15 : 0), iso-C(15 : 1), C(15 : 0), C(15 : 1)omega6c, iso-C(15 : 0) 3-OH and iso-C(17 : 0) 3-OH) and the low G+C content of the DNA (35.7 mol%), indicated that the strain should be separated from these two genera. From the results of phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, the bacterium should be classified as representing a novel genus and species, for which the name Mariniflexile gromovii gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Mariniflexile gromovii is KMM 6038(T) (=KCTC 12570(T)=LMG 22578(T)).

Structural characterization of the carbohydrate backbone of the lipooligosaccharide of the marine bacterium Arenibacter certesii strain KMM 3941(T).

The structure of the carbohydrate backbone of the lipooligosaccharide (LOS) of the marine bacterium Arenibacter certesii strain KMM 3941(T) has been elucidated. The structure was obtained by means of compositional analysis, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry and complete 1H and 13C and 31P NMR spectroscopy. It shows novel and interesting aspects and is the first description of Arenibacter lipopolysaccharides. Strong and mild alkaline treatments, to fully deacylate and only to O-deacylate the LOS were performed in order to determine the core structure. The core consists of a mixture of species differing by the presence of a non-stoichiometric alpha-d-rhamnose residue. The Kdo unit is substituted at O-5 by alpha-mannose and at O-4 by a alpha-galactosyluronic acid phosphate. The lipid A is constituted by a bis-phosphorylated disaccharide unit composed by a 2,3-diamino-2,3-dideoxy-beta-d-glucopyranose (DAG) residue as non-reducing end and a GlcN as reducing end.
