The NHS reform programme: implications for dental public health and the community dental services.

The structure and funding of the National Health Service in the United Kingdom has undergone major changes in recent years. A survey was conducted among senior personnel working within the dental public health and the community dental services to identify their roles and responsibilities, their views on the effects of the changes, and the future opportunities and challenges. A response rate of 76 per cent was obtained using a postal questionnaire. In general the reforms were viewed as positive, although purchasers were consistently more optimistic than providers. The survey also highlighted that until the uncertainty surrounding the future direction of oral health care services has been clarified, the future role of senior personnel within the Community Dental Service and dental public health will remain unclear.

The prevalence of oral health problems in participants of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

The Olympic Games are the focus of attention for millions of people in the world and provide the pinnacle of sporting excellence. The health and welfare of the participating sportsmen and women is paramount for successful competition and this must include oral health. The purpose of this paper is to describe a study undertaken at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 into the attendance patterns and oral health of patients visiting the dental clinic provided in the Olympic Village. Recommendations are made for the conduct of future dental care facilities at Olympic Games and the collection of data.

The future role of dental therapists in the UK: a survey of District Dental Officers and General Practitioners in England and Wales.

A postal questionnaire concerning the opinion of the dental profession as to the future role of dental therapists in the UK was sent to a random sample of 30 District Dental Officers and 70 General Dental Practitioners. In total 76 questionnaires were returned, 26 from DDOs, 50 from GDPs, giving corrected response rates of 86.7% and 57.1% respectively. Returns revealed that 69.2% of District Dental Officers predicted a future role for dental therapists in the Community Dental Service. A total of 47.5% of General Dental Practitioners stated they would like to see therapists working in general dental practice, with 40% of this group willing to employ a therapist providing the current legislation was changed. The most popular predicted role in both services appears to be an equal division between the provision of clinical care and dental health education. Recently qualified General Dental Practitioners were more in favour of the employment of therapists than older members of the profession, which suggest that with time, the demand for this auxiliary in general dental practice could increase.

Dental personnel planning and the single market: problems ahead?

Recently Whitehouse expressed concern about the possible implications of the legislation regarding the freedom of movement of labour within the European Community upon dental policy. Particular reference was made to the possibility of a major inflow of dental personnel to the United Kingdom. This paper looks at the evidence on which such worries appear to be based and examines the possibilities that this could have for planning dental personnel requirements in the UK. Dental personnel are defined in this paper as dental practitioners.
