Exchange bias as a probe of the incommensurate spin-density wave in epitaxial Fe/Cr(001).

We report clear multiple period oscillations in the temperature dependence of exchange bias in an Fe thin film exchange coupled to a neighboring Cr film. The oscillations arise due to an incommensurate spin-density wave in the Cr, with wave vector perpendicular to the Fe/Cr(001) interface. The exchange bias and coercivity allow for a determination of the extent of the thermally driven wavelength expansion, the (strain-suppressed) spin-flip transition temperature, and the Cr Néel temperature, which show a crossover from bulklike to finite-size behavior at a Cr thickness of approximately 1100 A. The data are consistent with a transition from a transverse to longitudinal wave on cooling.

Dynamics of a pinned magnetic vortex.

We observe the dynamics of a single magnetic vortex pinned by a defect in a ferromagnetic film. At low excitation amplitudes, the vortex core gyrates about its equilibrium position with a frequency that is characteristic of a single pinning site. At high amplitudes, the frequency of gyration is determined by the magnetostatic energy of the entire vortex, which is confined in a micron-scale disk. We observe a sharp transition between these two amplitude regimes that is due to depinning of the vortex core from a local defect. The distribution of pinning sites is determined by mapping fluctuations in the frequency as the vortex core is displaced by a static in-plane magnetic field.

Electrical detection of spin accumulation at a ferromagnet-semiconductor interface.

We show that the accumulation of spin-polarized electrons at a forward-biased Schottky tunnel barrier between Fe and -GaAs can be detected electrically. The spin accumulation leads to an additional voltage drop across the barrier that is suppressed by a small transverse magnetic field, which depolarizes the spins in the semiconductor. The dependence of the electrical accumulation signal on magnetic field, bias current, and temperature is in good agreement with the predictions of a drift-diffusion model for spin-polarized transport.

Interactions of spin waves with a magnetic vortex.

We have investigated azimuthal spin-wave modes in magnetic vortex structures using time-resolved Kerr microscopy. Spatially resolved phase and amplitude spectra of ferromagnetic disks with diameters from 5 microm down to 500 nm reveal that the lowest order azimuthal spin-wave mode splits into a doublet as the disk size decreases. We demonstrate that the splitting is due to the coupling between spin waves and the gyrotropic motion of the vortex core.

Imaging spin transport in lateral ferromagnet/semiconductor structures.

We directly imaged electrical spin injection and accumulation in the gallium arsenide channel of lateral spin-transport devices, which have ferromagnetic source and drain tunnel-barrier contacts. The emission of spins from the source was observed, and a region of spin accumulation was imaged near the ferromagnetic drain contact. Both injected and accumulated spins have the same orientation (antiparallel to the contact magnetization), and we show that the accumulated spin polarization flows away from the drain (against the net electron current), indicating that electron spins are polarized by reflection from the ferromagnetic drain contact. The electrical conductance can be modulated by controlling the spin orientation of optically injected electrons flowing through the drain.

Dynamic nuclear polarization by electrical spin injection in ferromagnet-semiconductor heterostructures.

Electrical spin injection from Fe into AlxGa1-xAs quantum well heterostructures is demonstrated in small (<500 Oe) in-plane magnetic fields. The measurement is sensitive only to the component of the spin that precesses about the internal magnetic field in the semiconductor. This field is much larger than the applied field and depends strongly on the injection current density. Details of the observed hysteresis in the spin injection signal are reproduced in a model that incorporates the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the epitaxial Fe film, spin relaxation in the semiconductor, and the dynamic polarization of nuclei by the injected spins.

Spatially resolved dynamics of localized spin-wave modes in ferromagnetic wires.

We have observed localized spin-wave modes in individual thin-film ferromagnetic wires using time-resolved Kerr microscopy as a micron-scale spectroscopic probe. The localization is due to the internal field profile present when an external field is applied in the plane of the film and perpendicular to the long axis of the wire. Spatially resolved spectra demonstrate the existence of distinct modes at the edges of a rectangular wire. Spectral images clearly show the crossover of the two edge modes into a single mode in low applied fields, in agreement with the results of micromagnetic simulations.
