Osseointegrated implants in a patient with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome. A 4 1/2-year follow up.

BACKGROUND: The Saudi female reported in this study was diagnosed with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome. She had lost all her teeth, including third molars, at the age of 18 years. METHOD: She was wearing full dentures for 7 years, before 5 titanium implants were installed in the mandible. RESULTS: 4 1/2 years after the implant installation, the treatment was clinically and radiographically successful. Neither A. actinomycetemcomitans nor P. gingivalis were detected at any of the implants. This very encouraging result does not differ from what is generally reported in edentulous medically healthy patients. CONCLUSION: The use of implants could considerably enhance future therapeutic options for the severely dentally compromised patients with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome.

Oral function in subjects with overdentures supported by osseointegrated implants.

Nine subjects treated with overdentures on osseointegrated implants in the mandible were functionally evaluated before and after treatment. The last recordings were performed 1 yr after treatment. The evaluation comprised a subjective and a clinical examination. Measurements of bite force and of chewing efficiency were also performed. The bite force was measured during gentle biting, biting as when chewing and biting with maximal effort. Almonds were used as test food. All subjects improved subjectively as well as clinically after treatment. The bite force during gentle biting increased on average from 17.3 N before treatment to 24.0 N 1 yr after treatment. A corresponding improvement of biting as when chewing was also found, from on average 24.0 N before to 38.7 N after treatment. The maximal bite force increased from on average 74.6 N at the baseline examination to 131.5 N at the 1-yr follow-up. The chewing efficiency improved from Ci = 4 (Median value) before treatment to Ci = 2.8 (Median value) after treatment. It is concluded that treatment with an overdenture supported by osseointegrated implants in the mandible improves oral function compared to the situation before treatment.

Adhesion of polycarboxylate-based dental cements to enamel: an in vivo study.

The bond strength of two polycarboxylate and two glass ionomer cements to enamel in vivo has been measured by a tensile test method. The four cements were used to cement small stainless steel cylinders onto the facial surfaces of 11 and 21. The cylinders were removed by a tensile force applied by a handpiece containing a semi-conductor sensory unit. The results showed that all cements gave two sets of bond strength values, either a good bond corresponding to a cohesive failure, or a weak bond corresponding to an adhesive failure. The mean bond strength values were lower than those recorded in vitro, and differences among the cements were limited.
