Hypercalcemia as a clinical prodrome to lymphoma.

A 73-year-old man was admitted for evaluation of unexplained hypercalcemia and was found to have a large-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with stage IV disease. Treatment with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin (Adriamycin), vincristine sulfate, and prednisone chemotherapy returned his calcium levels to normal. Hypercalcemia with lymphoma is rare, and persistent evaluation for malignancy is essential.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis in an anephric patient.

We have described a fatal case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a stable anephric patient who was not diabetic and was not receiving immunosuppressive therapy. In a literature search from 1966 to the present, ours is only the second case of a stable dialysis patient reported with this illness, and it is the only reported fatality.

Accidental hypothermia in a healthy quadriplegic patient.

An otherwise healthy 28-year-old quadriplegic patient was admitted to the hospital with a core temperature of 76 degrees F secondary to accidental hypothermia. Her neurologic disability was detrimental to thermoregulation by decreasing her ability to shiver actively and to vasoconstrict. The relationship between shivering and thermoregulation is discussed.

Hypothermia in the sunny South.

Accidental hypothermia has increased in prevalence among the aged poor, probably because of a marked increase in heating costs. Most cases of accidental hypothermia in the past have been reported from either England or the northern United States. We report our experience with this disorder in the Tampa (Florida) General Hospital over the past five years. Different manifestations, treatment, and complications are reviewed.
