Corrections, deviance, and social system stability.

Social control within a complex adaptive system is analyzed through the concept of requisite system variety in order to develop a conceptualization to assess the impact of various correctional modalities on social system viability. It is thus possible to critique contemporary strategies of criminal corrections in terms of their overall implication for social system change and to assess their potential contributions to long-run social system stability and adaptability.

A relation between heat of adsorption and breakthrough time for low concentrations of organic vapors in air passing a bed of charcoal at room temperature.

The concentration of pollutants in the breathing zone of exposed persons can be determined by adsorption of the pollutants. Condition is that during sampling the pollutants which have to be determined are trapped. A simple model has been developed which predicts with fair accuracy the amount of adsorbent necessary to trap the pollutant molecules which have to be determined.

[The diagnostic value of the 67gallium-scintigraphy in malignant melanoma (author's transl)].

In 24 melanoma patients body regions with suspicion of metastatic spread were scanned with 67Ga-Citrate. Twenty-two out of 28 melanoma metastases (79%) could be scintigraphically visualized. Falsely negative scans were particularly frequent with small, indurated skin metastases, whereas falsely positive scans were not observed in this study. By means of in vitro experiments it was shown that the uptake of 67Ga into a human melanoma cell line was temperature dependent and reached a maximal value at 37 degrees C after 2 hrs of incubation. Furthermore, it was found that under the same in vitro conditions our melanoma cells bound and released 67Ga differently from 51Cr. From the release studies it was concluded that 67Ga unlike 51Cr does not form a stabile intracellular complex with cell proteins.

[Clinical experiences with radionuclide dacryocystography (author's transl)].

In 105 patients, the clinical experience with radionuclide dacryocystography is reported, a scintiphotographic demonstration of the efferent lacrimal ducts. After application of 50 muCi of 99m Tc pertechnetate in 10 mul of normal saline into the conjunctival sac, the flow of the radionuclide through the efferent tear ducts is observed. This method is a valuable complement for the diagnosis and localization of dacryostenoses. A differentiation between a relative and an absolute stenosis is not possible with this investigational method alone. The kinetic of the tear flow can be investigated by means of so-called time-activity curves. Our studies show that the flow dynamics depend on the volume of the amount of fluid applied. We believe that statements on the flow dynamics under physiological conditions cannot be made as is indicated by other authors with a volume of 10 microliters. Under application of 50 muCi of pertechnetate, the exposure of radionuclide dacryocystography amounts to 15-25 mR for the lens and is far below the exposure by scull radiography.
