Growth hormone response to clonidine after recovery in patients with endogenous depression.

The growth hormone response to clonidine was measured in ten drug-free recovered patients, seven of whom had previously been tested when endogenously depressed, and compared with the response in ten individually matched controls. In eight of the patients there was an impairment of the growth hormone response, despite clinical recovery, although the hypotensive effect of clonidine in these patients was normal. This is suggestive of a persisting abnormal alpha2-adrenoceptor function in forebrain regions after recovery from an episode of endogenous depression, and may represent a trait marker for this condition.

The treatment of bulimia nervosa.

We review treatment approaches to bulimia nervosa, with particular emphasis on methodology and research design. The following treatments are considered: behaviour therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, pharmacological treatment, group therapy, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, self-help and support groups, hypnosis and miscellaneous (family therapy and nutritional approaches). Several directions for future research and methodological recommendations are suggested.

The early history of convulsive therapies in Australia.

The early experience of convulsive therapies in Australia was reported in the Medical Journal of Australia from 1935 to 1950. Cardiazol convulsive therapy, first used in Australia in 1937, appears to have been widely employed. Electroconvulsive therapy, first used here in 1941, rapidly became accepted as a mainstream treatment. Early response rates are discussed, as well as Australian adaptations of European techniques. Clinicians of the day considered the use of these procedures carefully and were circumspect about their future role.
