Rhinocerebral mucormycosis and internal carotid artery thrombosis in a previously healthy patient.

Mucormycosis is a very serious fungal infection caused by habitual saprophytes of the human organism, in many cases concomitant with various pathological conditions marked by immunodepression. The rhinocerebral variant habitually accompanies ketoacidotic diabetes. We report a case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a subject free from immunodepression and non-diabetic, in apparently normal health. Following treatment with amphotericin B combined with 5-fluorocytosine and surgery, remission of the disease was finally secured and about one year after the last operation there are no sign of resumption.

[An unusual case of focal symptomatology, monoparalysis of the abducent nerve and vertebrobasilar ectasia].

Ectasia of the basilar artery is a well-defined form with a complicated clinical symptomatology. Angiography has made it possible to show that its pathogenesis springs from marked changes in the diameter and length of the artery. A case is presented in which the usual array of symptoms was replaced by homonymous diplopia only. It showed that CT can on its own provide information both for diagnosis of the specific lesion, and for assessment of changes in the bone structures, the cerebral parenchima, and the ventricular system.

[Tomodensitometric studies in multiple sclerosis].

Thirty-five patients with multiple sclerosis were examined with Computed Tomography of the brain. CT was normal in six cases (17%), plaques of low attenuations were shown in ten patients (29%), cerebral atrophy was present in twenty-five cases (71%). Four areas of contrast enhancement appeared in two patients (5%) after intravenous administration of ioide.
