Anthropometric and training variables related to 10km running performance.

Sixty male distance athletes were divided into three equal groups according to their personal best time for the 10km run. The runners were measured anthropometrically and each runner completed a detailed questionnaire on his athletic status, training programme and performance. The runners in this study had similar anthropometric and training profiles to other distance runners of a similar standard. The most able runners were shorter and lighter than those in the other two groups and significantly smaller skinfold values (P less than 0.05). There were no significant differences between the groups for either bone widths or circumferences but the elite and good runners had significantly higher ponderal indices (P less than 0.05) than the average runners, indicating that they are more linear. Elite and good runners were also less endomorphic but more ectomorphic than the average runners. The elite runners trained more often, ran more miles per week and had been running longer (P less than 0.05) than good or average runners. A multiple regression and discriminant function analysis indicated that linearity, total skinfold, the type and frequency of training and the number of years running were the best predictors of running performance and success at the 10km distance.

Ependymoblastoma associated with prenatal exposure to diphenylhydantoin and methylphenobarbitone.

Ependymoblastoma developed in a 28-month-old girl whose epileptic mother took diphenylhydantoin and methylphenobarbitone throughout pregnancy. The child was also shown to be a genetic carrier for ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, an x-linked inborn error of urea cycle metabolism. The possibility of transplacental carcinogenesis should be considered, as other juvenile embryonic tumors such as neuroblastoma, melanotic neuroectodermal tumor, and mesenchymoma have been reported in offspring after diphenylhydantoin use by the mother during pregnancy.

Primary bone tumours in infants. Short literature review and report of 10 cases.

Ten cases of primary bone tumours in infants (1 osteosarcoma, 3 Ewing's sarcoma, 1 chondroblastoma and 5 angiomatosis) are reported. All cases of angiomatosis showed characteristic radiographic findings. In all the other tumours the X-ray appearances were different from those usually seen in older children and adolescents. In the authors' opinion the precise diagnosis of malignant bone tumours in infancy is very difficult as no characteristic X-ray features are present in this age period.

Sacral chondromyxoid fibroma.

A 15-year-old girl with a limp and weakness and wasting of the left leg, was found to have a large chondromyxoid fibroma of the sacrum. The lesion presented difficulties in diagnosis because of its unusual site, neurological presentation, large size and extensive extension into the soft tissues of the pelvis and buttock.

Anthropometric and training characteristics of female marathon runners as determinants of distance running performance.

The purpose of this study was to determine how female marathon runners of varying standards differed in body composition and physique and in their training regimes, and secondly to develop predictors of distance running performance from the anthropometric and training variables. Female marathon runners (n = 36), all participants in a national 10 mile (16 km) road racing championship, were divided into three groups according to their best time for the 26.2 mile race. They were assessed for body composition and somatotype using anthropometric techniques and completed a questionnaire about their current training for the marathon. No difference was found between the groups of distance runners when measured for height, bone widths and circumferences. The three groups were found to have similar body weights of approximately 53 kg, a value which is much lower than the average for sedentary women, but which compares favourably with those from previous studies of female long distance runners. While all the runners had a lower per cent fat, as measured from skinfold thicknesses, than sedentary women, the elite runners were seen to have significantly lower values (P less than 0.05) than the other two groups. The difference in body fat was particularly reflected in the triceps skinfold value. There was also a tendency for the elite runners to be more ectomorphic and less endomorphic than the others. The better runners were seen, on the whole, to have been running longer, and to have more strenuous regimes, both in terms of intensity of training and distance run per week. Multiple regression and discriminant function analyses indicated that the number of training sessions per week and the number of years training were the best predictors of competitive performance at both 10 mile and marathon distances. They also indicated that a female long distance runner with a slim physique high in ectomorphy has the greatest potential for success.

Effects of menstruation and contraceptive pill on the performance of physical education students.

Of the 109 specialist female physical education students who answered a detailed questionnaire on menstruation and the contraceptive pill in relation to exercise, 91 (83.5%) reported that they suffered menstrual problems. These included stomach ache, depression, abdominal cramps and backache. Over two-thirds of the students considered that these problems adversely influenced their physical performance. However, whether they had a mainly physiological or psychological effect is not clear. Many of the students with menstrual problems thought that exercise had a beneficial effect and helped alleviate their discomfort. A small number of students reported problems such as amenorrhoea and reduced menses possibly due to excessive training. Just under half the students in the investigation took the contraceptive pill, and though as many students taking the pill complained of menstrual problems as those not taking it, they reported less problems and to a lesser degree. Most students claimed that taking the contraceptive pill had no effect upon their performance.

The effects of smoking on the health and sleep of sportswomen.

This survey studied the health and sleeping patterns of 92 physical education and sports science students highly involved in sport. A strong correlation was found between smoking and various complaints of ill health as well as between smoking and sleep duration and quality of sleep. The results suggest that there is a strong relationship between the constituents of tobacco smoke and poor sleeping habits.

Pre- and post-adolescents' physiological response to exercise.

The physiological performance of a group of boys and girls aged eleven to twelve years was examined and nineteen of these children were retested again at aged sixteen years. The findings of this investigation support the findings of other similar studies that, when VO2 max is used as a determinant of cardiovascular performance, the performance of children increases with age, and in boys particularly, this increase in associated with an increase in body weight. After puberty boys have a greater oxygen consumption and thus a greater physiological performance than girls, mainly as a result of an improved cardiorespiratory efficiency and a greater muscle to weight ratio. The improvement in their physiological performance by those girls particularly interested in sport, however, also suggests that this factor is most influential to performance during growth at adolescence.

The relationship of physique and body composition to strength in a group of physical education students.

Fifty-three specialist women physical education students were measured anthropometrically and from these measurements somatotype and body composition were estimated. Leg, back and grip strength dynamometers were used to measure strength indices. Arm strength was calculated from each subject's pull-ups and push-ups and lung capacity was measured using a spirometer. The somatotype ratings and percent fat measurements indicate that the P.E. students are generally more muscular and less fat for their age than non-P.E. students. There was a strong relationship between percent fat and the endomorphy rating and a moderate relationship between lean body weight and mesomorphy. The moderate relationship of the strength variables with the muscular rating, whether expressed as mesomorphy or lean body weight, suggests that the higher a subject's muscular component the greater their dynamic strength.
