VOLUS--a visualization system for 3D ultrasound data.

The main goal of this paper is the description of a computer based system for medical applications to estimate the half-ellipsoid model that fits the left ventricle on its two phases of cardiac cycle: diastole and systole. Techniques for registration and rendering of ultrasound images will be presented using 2D freehand spatial calibrated echocardiography images in order to represent the 3D reconstructed data equivalent to the scanned volume. The 3D reconstruction will be used to estimate and measure parameters of the half-ellipsoid model fitted to the left ventricle.

[Diabetes mellitus and intracranial stenosis].

INTRODUCTION: The risk of having a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is approximately 3 to 5 times greater in the diabetic population than in non-diabetics. The physiopathological mechanisms of CVAs in patients with diabetes mellitus are not well-known, since few studies of this have been done. OBJECTIVES: To verify the hypothesis that intracranial arteriosclerosis, interpreted from findings of stenosis on intracranial Doppler studies, is greater in diabetics than in non-diabetics, independently of other vascular risk factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were selected from the Register of Cerebrovascular Diseases of the Neurology Department of the Hospital de Santa Maria as having had an ischemic cerebrovascular accident (CVA)/transient ischemic accident (TIA), assessed by a colour codified vertebral carotid eco-Doppler and transcranial Doppler. Intracranial changes in the diabetic and non-diabetic groups of patients were compared with relation to the presence of risks such as hypercolestrolaemia, arterial hypertension and smoking. RESULTS: 384 patients were included, 71 were diabetic and 313 non-diabetic. The two groups were comparable with regard to average age and sex. Intracranial stenosis was approximately 3.13 (95% CI = 1.69-5.79) times more frequent in the diabetic population than in non-diabetics. This difference persisted independently of the presence or absence of other vascular risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes mellitus is an important independent risk factor of alterations in the intracranial blood vessels and therefore of CVA. The intracranial circulation should be studied in these patients in view of the great frequency of intracranial stenoses and possible future improvements with therapeutic intervention.

[Results of the cochlear transplant program of the University of Navarra].

From October 1989 to the end of 1991, 33 patients have received a Cochlear Implant Nucleus 22 Channel, that have been selected from over 150 patients that consulted the possibility of implantation. A cochlear implant program should count with a group of professionals of diverse areas, that work in coordination without losing contact with the rest of the member of the implant team. Cochlear Implant are considered an efficient technique in the treatment of profound neurosensorial deafness, in Pre and Postlinguistic patients. The results obtained have been better in the last group of patients, but results on the whole are considered satisfactory. In prelinguist there is a progressive positive tendency, therefore a longer amount of time is necessary to define the final results. The therapeutic capacity of this method of treatment is not limited only to the auditory area, but it has effect also in other fields related to communication and the integral development of the patients on whom it is applied.
