[Acute leukemia in Dakar. Retrospective study apropos of 36 cases].

This study of acute leukaemia in adult at the two main hospitals in Dakar- the General Hospital from January 1980 to June 1986 and the A. Le Dantec Hospital from January 1978 to June 1986 - shows the progression of this ailment, which remains rare (0.85% of admissions - 5 cases per year). Certain clinical peculiarities are stressed (high frequency of infectious symptoms, considerable splenomegaly , adenopathy often present in acute myeloid leukaemia. More severe biological signs are evident than in series in the West, and (L.A.M.3) forms dominate. Grave developments are often the result of a shortage of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. The authors stress the need to create a haematological clinic.

Acute Disease

[Eosinophilia in Europeans returning from tropical countries (apropos of 36 cases)].

The etiological investigation of hypereosinophilia in 36 Europeans having returned from tropical zones permitted, by direct and indirect paraclinical tests, the diagnosis of helminthiasis in 26 cases (72.2%). The parasites in cause were bilharziosis, filariosis, strongyloidiasis, ankylostomiasis and liver flukes. Certain subjects were polyparasited. The investigation remained negative for 6 patients (16.6%), even though a parasitism was strongly suspected in at least 5 cases. In the other cases (11.1%) the etiological investigation remained doubtful with the exception of a case of non parasitic eosinophilia (polymyositis). There still remains much progress to make in rendering the actual serological tests more specific, more constant and presenting less cross reactions.

Adolescent

[Etiological factors in Burkitt's disease].

Different aetiological factors of Burkitt's disease, or Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) are considered in an analytical, then synthetical point of view, according to present admitted facts. Epidemiologic data are recalled in order to assign a place to the disease. Relations with Epstein-Barr virus (E.B.V.) are well-known by comparative pathology (connections between animal tumors and herpetic virus), virologic and serologic studies; the role of E.B.V. is based on the presence of viral genomas and nuclear antigens in tumoral cells of B.L.; there are B.L. without E.B.V., but constantly improved study of anti-E.B.V. antibodies, and viral markers, will may be decrease their number. Connections with malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum are recognized. Discovery of chromosomal aberrations is a new important stage. At the present time, it is generally guessed that: a) the initiation of malignant process might be induced by E.B.V. b) an external agent might cause the promotion of cellular division. c) chromosomal abnormality might be responsible for the malignant transformation.
