Soon after its entry into the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent in 1964, cholera El Tor progressively replaced classical cholera. One of the probable reasons for this was found from laboratory studies of the interaction of the two choleragenic vibrios, V. cholerae and V. El Tor. It was observed, in both in vitro and in vivo experiments, that in mixed culture El Tor vibrios from cholera cases are capable of outgrowing and rapidly eliminating V. cholerae. The apathogenic El Tor strains from the Middle East countries differed significantly from the pathogenic type of El Tor strains isolated from cholera cases in that the former did not inhibit the growth of V. cholerae strains. The possible mechanism of interaction of the pathogenic El Tor vibrios and V. cholerae was studied in detail. Various possibilities, including higher rates of multiplication of El Tor vibrios, competition for nutrients, secretion of inhibitory substances and liberation of lethal bacteriophage or vibriocins by El Tor vibrios, were examined. Although it was not possible to establish the actual mechanism of this interaction, the possible biological effect on the epidemiology of cholera was evident.

A total of 540 women (including 70 pregnant cases) of child bearing age with bad obstetrical history were tested serologically for anti-toxoplasma antibody using microlatex agglutination test. Forty two women including 5 cases of pregnancy were found to be seropositive in a titre of 1:32 or more. Maximum prevalence (10.2%) and highest titer of anti-toxoplasma antibodies were observed in women of 35-42 years age group. The overall prevalence of toxoplasmosis in these women was 7.7%, whereas it was 7.1% in pregnant women. Further studies are needed to estimate the exact rate of prevalence of infection. Of the 70 pregnant women, 5 were seropositive and two of them acquired infection during pregnancy which was detected by IgM immunosorbent assay. Seropositive pregnant women were treated using combined regimen of sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine. Four infected women with pregnancy were followed up and one did not turn up subsequently. There was spontaneous abortion in one case and in 3 other cases full term normal babies were delivered. Incidence of toxoplasmosis in women is low because of infrequent and uncommon practices of ingesting undercooked or uncooked food stuff specially meat by a substantial number of the population surveyed.
Muslim women are known to have lower incidences of cervical cancer and/or human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Here we aim to determine any association that may be present between the oncogenic HPV16/18 infections and abnormal cytological lesions along with demographic and other attributes among Indian Muslim women (n = 478) and compare with the neighboring Hindus (n = 534) from a prospective cohort study. Agewise distribution of both subject-groups is similar. HPV16/18 infection is present in 9.6% Muslims and 7.5% Hindu women. Jointly atypical cells of undetermined significance (a typical cells of undetermined significance) and HPV16/18 are present in seven Muslim and two Hindu women. No high squamous intraepithelial lesions or cervical cancer is detected at the baseline. HPV16/18 infections show trends that varied with age, a nonlinear trend among Muslim women. In Hindu women the prevalence is highest at age < or =24 years, which linearly drops with increasing age. Abnormal cytology increases significantly in both religion-groups with increasing age. The data show that these Indian Muslim women are equally susceptible to HPV16/18 infection and for the development of abnormal cytology. There is a paucity in epidemiological data, which justifies the need to screen women of all religions for cervical cancer (that includes oncogenic HPV testing).
Stress T1-201 myocardial scintigraphy was carried out in 16 patients with X-syndrome. 11 patients with ischaemic heart disease (IHD) with single vessel disease served as controls. With bicycle exercise test all 16 pts with X-syndrome had various types of myocardial perfusion abnormalities. These perfusion defects were situated in the vascular beds of different coronary arteries. Myocardial perfusion defects in patients with X-syndrome were similar to those in patients with moderate, but haemodynamically significant, single vessel disease. At the same time, these perfusion defects were significantly less pronounced than those in patients with subtotal occlusion of one coronary artery. Thus, patients with X-syndrome not only have clinical features of IHD (anginal attacks), but have marked stress-induced myocardial perfusion defects.
