[Trichophagia treated successfully by intravenous iron injections].

The case of a trichophagic child is presented. Oral and intramuscular iron therapy brought only temporary effect at the age of 3. Seven years later the 10-year-old highly intelligent girl ate again hair. She was not anaemic and her serum iron level was not low. Intravenous iron injections applied again ceased immediately the psychic aberration that did not return even after 4 years. The authors are of the opinion that in cases of such psychic anomalies the iron content of the iron-rich cerebral ganglia is lower than normal and the disturbance can be ceased by the administration of iron.

Administration, Oral

[Iron therapy in mental aberrations (pica) in childhood].

Besides of four pica cases (eating of dirt, paper, cotton, oakum, sand, lime, chalk) the authors report on a girl with trichophagia. The treatment of choice in pica consists in a sufficient supply of iron. The authors suggest that the intravenously administered iron acts on some centers of the central nervous system.

Anemia, Hypochromic

Action of staphylococcal exfoliative toxins on epidermal cell cultures and organotypic skin.

In the staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, spontaneous intraepithelial cleavages are due to the exfoliative toxins A or B (ETA or ETB). Until now, these toxins have been studied either on epidermis or on organotypic skin cultures. In the present study, we compare the effects of these toxins on human keratinocyte cell cultures to those on human and mouse organotypic skin cultures. With concentrations of ETA or ETB of 1 mg/ml for 3 hours, spontaneous intraepithelial cleavages were noted in both cell and organotypic cultures. Keratinocyte cell cultures were as sensitive as organotypic skin cultures to these toxins. Since keratohyaline granules may represent a possible binding site for ETA or ETB, we tried to correlate the expression of keratohyaline granules with the appearance of intraepithelial clefts due to the toxins. However, when cultured in liquid medium, epithelia were not differentiated enough to allow the detection of the binding site of ETA-ETB.

Animals

[Geophagia sideropenica].

The authors describe two cases of geophagia (45 years old mother and her 25 years old daughter). Both suffered from an anaemia of medium degree only (case 1: 3.77 million of erythrocytes, Hb 8.5 g%; case 2: 3.34 million of erythrocytes, Hb 10 g%), there was a serious iron deficiency (46 and 35 microgram % respectively of serum iron). Both were blood donors, the mother 7 times and the daughter 31 times. In both cases the iron deficiency existed before geophagia. The desire for eating argillacecous earth already disappeared after the application of some ampules of Ferrlecit injected intravenously, even before the values of the serum iron and the number of erythrocytes had changed. The number of erythrocytes, the Hb value and that of haematocrit as well as the values of the serum iron normalized completely. EEG changes were observed in both cases, which could be influenced by the ferrotherapy. The authors recommend the serum iron estimation in all blood donors as well as the introduction of their routine treatment with iron preparations.

Adult

["In situ" anesthetics and experimental cryotumorectomy].

Some similarities have been found between the actions of anesthetics and freezing on biological membranes. Therefore, it has been thought that these agents could potentiate the destructive effect of cryosurgery. Experiments on cryopreservation of HeLa cells in vitro using three anesthetics--thiopental sodium, lignocaïne and CT 1341--indicate enhancement of "cryosensitivity". When using in vivo the same anesthetics injected in an experimental carcinoma (KDMC) of the Sprague-Dawley rat, cryosurgically treated, the results are: --no tumoricidal effect nor antitumoral activity of these agents when used alone,--the simultaneous use of anesthetics and cryosurgery gives better (but no significant results than cryosurgery alone,--the best agent in regard to this possible adjuvant effect seems to be thiopental sodium, it also facilitates tumoral dissemination. The authors conclude from these preliminary results that they need further experiments to assess this findings with smaller tumors, more numerous animals, same and others anesthetics at different concentrations. They attempt to define some caracteristics of potentiative agents during physical phase of cryodestruction.

Alfaxalone Alfadolone Mixture

[Effect of intratumoral injection of bacterial and viral neuraminidase in rats].

We studied the effect of neuraminidase injection in rat's tumor at different doses: 5,10,50,100, 500 U and we concluded that: There was no difference between the rats treated with 5,10,50 U and the controls. The y died 3 weeks after the injection. But the rats treated by 100 at 500 U of NA died quickley, in the week, of long metastases.
