Porcine calcitonin used in vitro increases ADP and collagene induced aggregation in human platelets.

Specific localization of C cells at the electron microscope level was achieved by an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. The hormone is present in the electron dense granules. The presence of granules apparently devoid of calcitonin was also detected.

The (glyoxal bis 2 hydroxyanil-calcium) complex is used to localize calcium in the rat thyroid. With low temperature and freezed slices, the colloid calcium content seems more important than that of epithelium.
It was found that calcitonin (porcine) at the dose: 4 I.U. MRC./kg/hr (i.v.), in the rabbit, increased the diuresis and oxmolal excretion, and simultaneously decreased free-water reabsorption and urinary osmolality. The results suggest that calcitonin acts by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the ascending limb of Henl's loop. This hypothesis was confirmed by renal autoradiography study with 22Na.
The intravenous injection that was given to rabbits which consisted of 0,5 mg of a common heptapeptide to ACTH4-10, BETA MSH11-17 hormones, and to beta lipotropic47-53 hormone (beta LPH47-53) was followed at the end of an hour by an augmentation of 70% of total lipids, and at the end of two hours by a lowering of calcemia (around 27%) and of phosphoremia (20%). The injection of a tetrapeptide corresponding to only ACTH7-10 bound to a nitrobenzylhydralamin and in presence of a Freund adjuvants has provoked the formation of corresponding antibodies.

Biological data concerning 249 thyroid patients have been treated by using correspondance factor analysis. This statistical treatment has enabled us to compare 2 types of associated tests (in vitro, in vivo) and to evaluate their respective contribution to the diagnosis of different thyroid diseases. There appeared also certain possibilities for the use of such a method in the future: determination of a biological profile for thyroid disease and for Grave's disease patients in course of treatment.
The calcitonin-adrenal antagonism brings the authors to propose a new therapeutic use of calcitonin. That hormone could minimize the effects of externe stimulations and its use as sedative is proposed.
