[Breast reconstruction].

Breast reconstruction has been the subject of many controversies. It now seems generally agreed however that the operation has no deleterious influence on the follow up of breast cancer patients and that it has favorable psychologic effects. Breast reconstruction can be performed either by using prostheses or analogous tissues. These two different modalities have each their own advantages and limitations. Deep knowledge of the techniques and their indications allows to select the most appropriate approach in the individual patient and, thus, to improve long term results.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Conservative approach in non surgical pneumoperitoneum: a case report and literature review.

An observation on Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis (PCI) in a 66-year-old man is reported. His general condition allowed a thorough clinical and laboratory investigation which resulted in the diagnosis of the disease and the avoidance of an unnecessary laparotomy. PCI is a relatively rare condition characterized by multiple intramural pockets of gas involving any portion of the gastro intestinal tract. Various theories reflect either a mechanical or a bacterial etiology. Most of the patients are asymptomatic although some experience gastrointestinal complaints. The majority of patients require no treatment.

Ileal intussusception due to invagination of Meckel's diverticulum.

A middle-aged patient is reported who came to laparotomy after a six months period of abdominal complaints. Extensive investigations couldn't explain his symptoms. At laparotomy he was found to have an ileal intussusception due to an invaginated Meckel's diverticulum. These events are confronted with other collected literature reports. Symptomatology and treatment are discussed.

Cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas: characteristics and surgical strategy.

When a cystic lesion of the pancreas is encountered, the first priority is to differentiate whether it is an inflammatory or neoplastic cyst. Failure to recognize the true nature of a neoplastic cyst will lead to an incorrect treatment strategy. This was dramatically proven in one of our patients. Nevertheless, because of the slow growth of this type of tumor, its tendency not to infiltrate adjacent structures and the relatively low likelihood of metastasis, operative resection should be attempted in all patients, even in more advanced stages.
