Comparison of prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibilities of Campylobacter spp. isolates from organic and conventional dairy herds in Wisconsin.

The prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibilities of Campylobacter spp. isolates from bovine feces were compared between organic and conventional dairy herds. Thirty organic dairy herds, where antimicrobials are rarely used for calves and never used for cows, were compared with 30 neighboring conventional dairy farms, where antimicrobials were routinely used for animals for all ages. Fecal specimens from 10 cows and 10 calves on 120 farm visits yielded 332 Campylobacter isolates. The prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in organic and conventional farms was 26.7 and 29.1%, and the prevalence was not statistically different between the two types of farms. Campylobacter prevalence was significantly higher in March than in September, higher in calves than in cows, and higher in smaller farms than in large farms. The rates of retained placenta, pneumonia, mastitis, and abortion were associated with the proportion of Campylobacter isolation from fecal samples. The gradient disk diffusion MIC method (Etest) was used for testing susceptibility to four antimicrobial agents: ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, erythromycin, and tetracycline. Two isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin, and none of isolates was resistant to gentamicin or erythromycin. Resistance to tetracycline was 45% (148 of 332 isolates). Tetracycline resistance was found more frequently in calves than in cows (P = 0.042), but no difference was observed between organic and conventional farms. When we used Campylobacter spp. as indicator bacteria, we saw no evidence that restriction of antimicrobial use on dairy farms was associated with prevalence of resistance to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, erythromycin, and tetracycline.

Effect of anionic salt and highly fermentable carbohydrate supplementations on urine pH and on experimentally induced hypocalcaemia in cows.

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of dietary grain on calcium homeostasis. Six rumen-fistulated dairy cows with 3 or more previous lactations and no history of parturient paresis were randomly assigned to a sequence of diets in a crossover study with 4 periods of 10 days each. Dietary treatments were: A control ration consisting of wrap grass silage alone (1), the control ration supplemented with ammonium chloride and ammonium sulphate salt solution (2), control ration following a period with supplementation (3) and control ration supplemented with increasing amounts of barley from 4 to 10 kg/cow per day, expected to produce subclinical rumen acidosis (4). Daily intake of the diets was adjusted to 14 kg DM/cow per day. On day 11, the calcium-regulating mechanisms in cows were challenged until recumbency by a standardized intravenous EDTA infusion and cows were left to recover spontaneously. Anion supplementation and the feeding of highly fermentable carbohydrate lowered urine pH below 7.0 due to subclinical acidosis. During spontaneous recovery from EDTA induced hypocalcaemia, the cows more quickly regained a whole blood free calcium concentration of 1.00 mmol/L if they had most recently been supplemented with either anionic salts or with increasing amounts of barley, as compared to the basic ration. It is concluded that so-called slug-feeding or 'steaming up' with highly fermentable carbohydrates before parturition in milk fever susceptible cows enhanced calcium homeostasis similar to the effect seen in cows on anionic diets.

Comparison of antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bulk tank milk in organic and conventional dairy herds in the midwestern United States and Denmark.

An observational study was conducted to compare the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bulk tank milk in organic and conventional dairy farms in Wisconsin, United States, and southern Jutland, Denmark. Bulk tank milk samples and data regarding management and production were collected from 30 organic and 30 conventional dairy farms in Wisconsin and 20 organic and 20 conventional dairy farms in Denmark. S. aureus isolates were tested for resistance against 15 antimicrobial agents by semiautomatic microbroth dilution methods in each country. Of the 118 bulk tank milk samples in Wisconsin, 71 samples (60%) yielded at least one S. aureus isolate, and a total of 331 isolates were collected. Of the 40 bulk tank milk samples from Denmark, 27 samples (55%) yielded at least one S. aureus isolate, and a total of 152 isolates were collected. Significant differences between organic and conventional dairies were detected only to ciprofloxacin in Wisconsin and avilamycin in Denmark. Significant differences (P < 0.05) between the two countries were detected in nine antimicrobials. Denmark had a higher probability of having reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin and streptomycin (P = 0.015 and 0.003, respectively). Wisconsin isolates had a higher probability of having reduced susceptibility to seven other antimicrobial agents (bacitracin, gentamicin, kanamycin, penicillin, sulphamethoxazole, tetracycline, and trimethoprim). We found small differences between organic and conventional farm types in each country and larger differences between the two national agricultural systems.

Mycobacterium bovis (bovine TB) exposure as a recreational risk for hunters: results of a Michigan Hunter Survey, 2001.

SETTING: Tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis (bovine TB) is endemic in the white-tailed deer population of north-eastern Michigan. Hunters may be exposed to M. bovis via cutaneous inoculation while field dressing deer or by ingestion of undercooked venison. Michigan hunters have received inconsistent messages about their risk of acquiring tuberculosis from recreational exposure to deer. The most common health advice offered has been to wear gloves while field dressing deer and to cook venison products thoroughly. OBJECTIVE: Data were collected to quantify these self-protective activities and to characterize hunters practicing these activities. DESIGN: In 2001, we surveyed 1833 hunters who had successfully harvested deer in or near Michigan's bovine TB endemic area in 2000. RESULTS: The survey response rate was 78%. Most hunters (89%) reported field dressing deer, 43% of whom wore gloves. Most hunters (95%) reported eating venison, 55% of whom reported their venison was always cooked thoroughly. Several hunter characteristics, including older age, female sex, higher awareness level, and area of residence, were significantly associated with the practice of these self-protective activities. CONCLUSION: The survey results suggest that hunters should receive consistent advice encouraging glove use while field dressing deer and the thorough cooking of venison products before consumption.

The effect of ascorbic acid and L-histidine therapy on acute mammary inflammation in dairy cattle.

Ascorbic acid and L-histidine were investigated as antioxidant therapies for acute mammary inflammation. Mastitis was induced in eight nonpregnant Holstein cows by intramammary infusion of endotoxin. Treatments were administered in a 4 x 4 Latin square crossover design with 1-wk periods between challenges with endotoxin. Four individual treatments, control, ascorbic acid only, L-histidine only, and ascorbic acid plus L-histidine, were applied. Two doses of 25 g of ascorbic acid administered intravenously at 3- and 5-h postendotoxin challenge increased milk production recovery (9% higher, P < 0.02) and tended to reduce the extent of rumen stasis. Two doses of 25 g of L-histidine similarly administered decreased plasma antioxidant activities 5.5% (P < 0.05). However, ascorbic acid and L-histidine had no effects on rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and dry matter intake. The data suggested that ascorbic acid provided some potential benefit for recovery from acute mammary inflammation in dairy cattle.

Trends in antibacterial susceptibility of mastitis pathogens during a seven-year period.

Milk samples collected from dairy cattle suspected of having mastitis were submitted to the Microbiology Laboratory of the Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Michigan State University, for bacteriologic culture. A total of 2778 isolates, from the years 1994 to 2000, were isolated, identified, and subjected to in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the disk diffusion method, in accordance with National Committee on Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) standards. Isolates included in this study were Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia marcesens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The proportion of bacterial isolates determined to be susceptible did not change during the 7-yr period for the majority of bacterial-antibacterial interactions tested. However, analysis for linear trend in proportions determined that there were increases in the proportion of S. aureus isolates that were susceptible to ampicillin, penicillin, and erythromycin. For Strep. uberis, increases in the proportion of susceptible isolates occurred for oxacillin, sulfa-trimethoprim, gentamicin, and pirlimycin, and a decrease in the proportion of susceptible isolates occurred with penicillin. For Strep. dysgalactiae, increases in the proportion of susceptible isolates occurred with erythromycin, gentamicin, sulfa-trimethoprim, and tetracycline. For Strep. agalactiae, increases in the proportion of susceptible isolates occurred with sulfa-trimethoprim. Among E. coli isolates, there was an increase in the proportion that were susceptible to ampicillin and cephalothin. Among K pneumoniae isolates, there was an increase in the proportion that were susceptible to ceftiofur. Overall, there was no indication of increased resistance of mastitis isolates to antibacterials that are commonly used in dairy cattle.

Efficacy of systemic ceftiofur as a therapy for severe clinical mastitis in dairy cattle.

The objectives of this study were to determine the efficacy of intramuscular administration of ceftiofur to reduce the incidence of case-related death and culling following severe clinical mastitis in lactating dairy cattle. A total of 104 cows with severe clinical mastitis (systemic signs) were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. Immediately after detection of the case, one group was administered 2.2 mg/kg of ceftiofur intramuscularly, and the dose repeated at 24-h intervals for a total of five doses. The second group of cows did not receive systemic antibacterial therapy. Additionally, all cows in both treatment groups received intramammary pirlimycin (Pirsue) in the affected quarter every 24 h for a total of up to three doses. Also at the onset of the case, all cows on the trial were administered a supportive therapeutic regimen of fluids and anti-inflammatory agents that varied from farm to farm, but was standard within each herd at the discretion of the herd manager and veterinarian. Of all cases 14/104 (13.5%) resulted in a lost cow (died or culled). The proportion of cases that resulted in a lost cow and were treated with ceftiofur (4/51; 7.8%) did not statistically differ from cows that were not treated with ceftiofur (10/53; 18.9%). However, the proportion of cases that resulted in lost cows was higher for those cases that yielded a coliform organism on culture (14/56; 25.0%) than cases that did not yield coliforms (0/48; 0.0%; P < 0.001). Thus, among coliform cases, cows that were not treated with ceftiofur were more likely to be culled or die (10/27, 37.0%; P < 0.05) than cows treated with ceftiofur (4/29, 13.8%). We conclude that intramuscular administration of ceftiofur did not affect the outcome of severe clinical mastitis when all etiologic agents are included in the analysis. However, for severe clinical mastitis cases caused by coliform organisms, ceftiofur therapy reduced the proportion of cases that resulted in cow death or culling. This benefit may be realized because of the amelioration of bacteremic-related pathogenesis.

Incidence of clinical mastitis in Danish dairy cattle and screening for non-reporting in a passively collected national surveillance system.

Dairy herds from three counties in Denmark (n=2144) were monitored for a 1-year period to measure the incidence rate (incidence-density) of clinical mastitis. Two different screening methods were evaluated to remove herds from the database for which the herdsman and veterinarian were suspected of under-reporting the mastitis cases which had occurred. One method was based upon agreement between clinical mastitis reports and measures of somatic cell counts of >1 million cells per ml. A second method was based upon agreement between cases reported through the regular disease-reporting system and cases reported on a management questionnaire. Depending upon the method of calculation and screening method used, rates of clinical mastitis varied between 36 and 48 cases per 100 cow-years at risk. The exclusion of herds because of documented non-reporting behavior (screening) resulted in a preponderance of herds with zero or very low incidence of mastitis being removed from the database. Following screening, the frequency distribution of herd mastitis incidence rates became decidedly more symmetrically and normally distributed.

Digital angiography of the feet of horses.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the vascular anatomy of the palmar digital artery and its major branches in the equine foot and to quantify the diameter of these vessels by use of digital angiograms. Sample Population-6 thoracic limbs obtained from 6 horses. PROCEDURE: Distal portions of each limb were perfused with aerated Krebs-Henseleit solution. Digital angiograms were acquired in standing and lateral recumbent positions, following an intra-arterial injection of iopamidol. Select vessels were measured on radiographic views, and values were corrected for magnification. RESULTS: The palmar digital artery tapered from 2.28 mm at the coronary region to 1.61 mm at the entrance to the solar canal, and the major arterial branches ranged in diameter from 0.71 to 1.42 mm in the standing position. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Digital angiography is useful for imaging small vessels, but penumbra limits the image resolution of the macrovasculature of the foot. The palmarodorsal projection is more useful for evaluation of the terminal arch and solar branches, but 2 projections are necessary for a thorough examination of the foot. Image magnification, position of horse, and vascular response to contrast medium must be considered in the quantitative assessment of vessel diameter. Digital angiography may be performed in clinical cases and research models for examination of vascular perfusion of the distal portion of the limb.

Recombinant bovine somatotropin: association with reproductive performance in dairy cows.

A clinical trial was performed to determine the effect of bST on reproductive performance in dairy cows on 4 Michigan dairy farms when bST was used according to labeled directions. Holstein cows (n = 555) at 4 Michigan dairy farms were randomly assigned to receive bovine somatotropin (bST) or to serve as untreated controls. Bovine somatotropin (500 mg, s.c.) was administered every 14 d beginning at 63 to 69 d of lactation and continuing until approximately 21 d prior to the end of lactation or until the producer removed the animal from the herd. A total of 229 (42.57%) animals consisting of 112 (48.91%) controls and 117 (51.09%) bST-treated cows were not diagnosed pregnant and were considered as having reproductive failure by 150 d of lactation and 92 (17.10%) of the animals consisting of 45 (48.91%) controls and 47 (51.09%) bST-treated cows had reproductive failure at the end of their lactation. No significant difference in the incidence of reproductive failure existed between the study treatment groups during either time frame. Cows with cystic ovarian disease had more instances of reproductive failure at 150 d of lactation than cows without this disease. Cows with dystocia, twin births, metritis, displaced abomasum and cystic ovarian disease had more instances of reproductive failure by the end of lactation than cows without these diseases. The bST-treated cows developed more nonspecific off feed conditions during the study lactation and had more twin births at the calving following bST administration compared to control cows. No differences were found between the study treatment groups in calculations of reproductive parameters. Logistic regression analysis found no significant effect of bST on reproductive failure; the odds ratios for the bST treatment effect on reproductive failure at 150 d of lactation and reproductive failure at the end of lactation were 0.95 (95% CI 0.67 to 1.36) and 0.95 (95% CI 0.59 to 1.54), respectively. Overall, bST was not found to have a significant impact on reproductive performance in the herds studied.

Determining factors for successful adoption of dogs from an animal shelter.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether certain characteristics of dogs offered for adoption are associated with successful adoption. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. ANIMALS: 1,468 relinquished dogs offered for adoption at a local humane society. PROCEDURE: Data regarding dogs offered for adoption were obtained from surveys completed by previous owners. Data were analyzed by use of bivariate statistics and multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Of dogs offered for adoption, 1,073 were successfully adopted, 239 were not adopted, and 157 were returned to the shelter after adoption. Terrier, hound, toy, and nonsporting breeds were found to be significantly associated with successful adoption (P < 0.05, chi 2 analysis). Certain coat colors (gold, gray, and white), small size, and history of an indoor environment were also significant predictors of successful adoption. The correlation coefficient (0.048) indicated that only a small percentage of variance in adoption success could be explained by the multiple logistic regression model. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Animal shelter managers with limited kennel capacity may wish to periodically use surveys to determine whether the type of dog being offered to the public reflects the type of dog the public will adopt.

Intestinal parasites in swine in the Nordic countries: prevalence and geographical distribution.

In Denmark (DK), Finland (FIN), Iceland (I), Norway (N), and Sweden (S), 516 swine herds were randomly selected in 1986-1988. Individual faecal analyses (mean: 27.9 per herd) from eight age categories of swine showed that Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum spp., Isospora suis, and Eimeria spp. were common, while Trichuris suis and Strongyloides ransomi-like eggs occurred sporadically. Large fatteners and gilts were most frequently infected with A. suum with maximum prevalences of 25-35% in DK, N and S, 13% in I and 5% in FIN. With the exception of the remarkably low A. suum prevalence rates in FIN, no clear national differences were observed. Oesophagostomum spp. were most prevalent in adult pigs in the southern regions (21-43% in DK and southern S), less common in the northern regions (4-17% adult pigs infected), and not recorded in I. I. suis was common in piglets in DK, I, and S (20-32%), while < 1% and 5% were infected in N and FIN, respectively. Eimeria spp. had the highest prevalences in adult pigs (max. 9%) without clear geographical differences. I. suis and Eimeria spp. were recorded for the first time in I, and I. suis for the first time in N.

Sino-orbital giant cell reparative granuloma.

An otherwise healthy, 9-year-old boy had gradual onset of a mass deformity in the region of the left medial canthus with resulting superior and lateral globe displacement. Radiographic evaluation demonstrated an osteolytic, expansile lesion involving the bones of the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. Combined anterior orbitotomy and nasal endoscopic surgical resection revealed additional involvement of the nasolacrimal sac wall. Histopathology was consistent with a giant cell reparative granuloma. The authors know of 15 case reports of sino-orbital giant cell reparative granulomas with ophthalmic manifestations; only 3 of these appeared in the ophthalmology literature. This case appears unique in that extension of the abnormal tissue into the nasolacrimal sac wall was demonstrated.

Recombinant bovine interleukin-2 and dry cow therapy: efficacy to cure and prevent intramammary infections, safety, and effect on gestation.

Cows from eight commercial dairies were randomly assigned to intrammamary infusions of cephapirin or cephapirin plus interleukin-2 at the end of lactation. During the first phase of the trial, interleukin-2 was administered to 159 cows at a dose of 1 mg per gland by intracisternal infusion immediately after 300 mg of cephapirin were administered. One hundred sixty-one cows received infusions of a placebo (phosphate-buffered saline; PBS) immediately after cephapirin. In the second phase of the trial, 70 cows received 2 mg of interleukin-2 per gland, and 78 cows received the placebo. Cows were observed daily by the participating farmer for 72 h after infusion and also during routine feeding and care during the dry period and at calving. Potential side effects from udder infusions, particularly gross abnormalities of the udder and signs of systemic side effects were monitored. During the first phase, cure rates for intramammary infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus that were present at the end of lactation were 33.3% for quarters treated with cephapirin and 53.6% for quarters treated with cephapirin and interleukin-2. Cure rates did not differ between treatment groups for all other pathogens or during the second phase of the trial. The incidence of new intramammary infections during the dry period was not affected by intramammary infusion of interleukin-2. Eighteen of 229 (7.9%) cows treated with interleukin-2 aborted within 49 d of treatment compared with 4 of 239 (1.7%) cows treated with PBS. Eleven of the 18 (61.1%) abortions by cows treated with interleukin-2 occurred 3 to 7 d after infusion; none of the abortions by cows treated with PBS occurred until wk 7 after infusion.

Efficacy of postmilking disinfection with benzyl alcohol versus lodophor in the prevention of new intramammary infections in lactating cows.

Five Michigan dairy herds participated in a split-herd study to compare the efficacy of two postmilking teat dips in the prevention of new intramammary infections (IMI) in lactating cows. Three hundred seventy cows were assigned to 4% benzyl alcohol, and 387 cows were assigned to 1% iodophor germicidal teat dip. The teat dips were applied by directly immersing the teats immediately after milking. Once a group was assigned to a teat dip, cows in that group maintained on that same teat dip throughout the trial. Total new IMI numbered 254 and 201 for cows treated with benzyl alcohol and iodophor germicidal teat dip, respectively. Staphylococcus spp. (52.0%), Staphylococcus aureus (20.1%), and Corynebacterium bovis (12.2%) were the predominant pathogens that caused new IMI in cows treated with benzyl alcohol. Staphylococcus spp., Staph. aureus, and C. bovis, respectively, were the pathogens responsible for 69.7, 12.4, and 4.5% of the new IMI in cows treated with iodophor. The incidences of new IMI caused by Staph. aureus (0.66 new IMI/100 milking quarters per mo), C. bovis (0.38 new IMI/100 milking quarters per mo), and all pathogens (3.15 new IMI/100 milking quarters per mo) were higher in cows treated with benzyl alcohol than in cows treated with iodophor (0.29, 0.11, and 2.35 new IMI/100 milking quarters per mo, respectively). Incidence of new IMI did not differ between groups for other pathogens. One percent iodophor prevented new IMI caused by contagious pathogens more effectively than did benzyl alcohol.

Effects of parenteral administration of vitamin E on health of periparturient dairy cows.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of administration of vitamin E (D-alpha-tocopherol) on the incidence of retained placenta, metritis, and clinical mastitis during early lactation and on tocopherol concentrations. DESIGN: Prospective randomized controlled study. ANIMALS: 420 Holstein cows. PROCEDURE: Vitamin E (3,000 mg, IM, once) was administered to 204 cows B to 14 days before expected parturition, and 216 control cows were not treated. The number of cows that had retained placenta, metritis, clinical mastitis, displaced abomasum, and clinically apparent acetonemia or hypocalcemia were recorded. Serum concentrations of tocopherol, the tocopherol:cholesterol ratio, and glutathione-peroxidase activity were determined from samples obtained before administration of vitamin E, 7 and 14 days after administration, and at 30 days after parturition from 36 treated and 36 control cows. RESULTS: Administration of vitamin E significantly decreased the incidence of retained placenta and metritis (13/204 [6.4%] and 8/204: [3.9%], respectively, for the vitamin E-treated group; 27/216 [12.5%] and 19/ 216 [8.8%], respectively, for the untreated group) but did not affect the incidence of clinical mastitis. Serum vitamin E concentration was significantly higher in treated than in control cattle at 7 and 14 days after administration, but serum tocopherol: cholesterol ratio was significantly higher only at 7 days after administration. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Parenteral administration of a single injection of vitamin E before parturition may decrease the incidence of retained placenta and metritis in dairy cows but will increase serum concentrations for 7 to 14 days after administration.

The role of epidemiology in public health.

Epidemiology is the study of disease in populations. Veterinarians and others involved in the preventive medicine and public health professions use epidemiological methods for disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and observational studies to identify risk factors of zoonotic disease in both human and animal populations. Knowledge of these risk factors is used to direct further research investigation and to implement disease control measures. The use of hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) systems depends greatly on information produced by epidemiological studies. Epidemiological methods are used for disease surveillance to identify which hazards are the most important. Epidemiological studies are also used to identify risk factors which may represent critical control points in the food production system.
