Ajugatansins, neo-clerodane diterpenes from Ajuga reptans.

New neo-clerodane diterpenes have been isolated from Ajuga reptans, and named ajugatansins, along with the previously reported ajugavensin A and ajugareptansone A. The structures of all the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic means and comparison with closely related compounds reported in the literature. The new 6 alpha,19-diacetoxy-4 alpha,18-epoxy-1 beta-hydroxy-3 beta-(2-methyl-butanoyloxy)-neo-clerod-13-en-15,16-olide (ajugatansin A1) and 6 alpha,19-diacetoxy-4 alpha,18-epoxy-3 beta-hydroxy-12S-(2-methylbutanoyloxy)-neo-clerod-13-en-15,16-olide (ajugatansin B1) are structurally related to ajugarin I and (11S,13R,16S)-6 alpha, 19-diacetoxy-4 alpha,18:11,16:15,16-triepoxy-3 beta-(2-methylbutanoyloxy)-1 beta-[(E)-2-methyl-2-butenoyloxy]-neo-clerodan-2 beta-ol (ajugatansin D1) to dihydroclerodin.

Fragile X screening program in a Spanish region.

In a Spanish region with a population of one million, we screened 371 mentally retarded males, who had no previous diagnosis for fragile X [fra(X))] syndrome. Fifty-three of the 371 males were fra(X) positive. Of these 44 of 362 or 12.1% were unrelated. Family studies identified a large number of obligate carriers and women at risk for being carriers who were given genetic counseling including prenatal diagnostic information. Considering the age of the carriers and the fertility rate, 23 affected males could be born to these women. The prevention potential of this program suggests that it is highly cost-effective.

[Prevalence of anti-hepatitis A in patients with chronic liver disease].

The recent availability of an effective vaccine for preventing hepatitis A has led to the performance of a prevalence study of antibodies versus the hepatitis A virus (HAV) in our patients with chronic liver disease by hepatitis B and C, as a step prior to vaccination. The sera of 425 patients with a mean age of 40 years was studied, with the global antibodies versus HAV being determined (Abbott). The prevalence was to 75.2% varying from 20% at 19 years to 93% in those over the age of 40. The prevalence was not related to sex, previous parenteral history, or drug addiction or infection by hepatitis B or C. Due to previous cost-benefit studies and the high prevalence found, the determination of anti-HAV in patients with chronic viral liver diseases prior to vaccination against HAV is recommended.
