Normal values for neurone specific enolase in amniotic fluid have been found to follow a non gaussian distribution with a 1-99 centile range of 1.10-4.32 micrograms/L. Neurone specific enolase levels have been shown to be raised in the amniotic fluid of pregnancies complicated by anencephaly, although not those complicated by open spina bifida. Neurone specific enolase measured by radioimmunoassay is capable of totally discriminating between normal pregnancies and those complicated by anencephaly. The study demonstrates the possible value of investigating other neuronal proteins which may find value as adjuncts to amniotic fluid Alpha fetoprotein levels in the prenatal diagnosis of Neural Tube Defects.

Kainic acid or ibotenic acid was injected unilaterally into the major target regions of the axons of retinal ganglion cells--the superior colliculus (SC) or dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (DLG)--of rat pups ranging in age from postnatal day 0 to postnatal day 10 (P0 - P10). While the collicular or geniculate neurons within the injection site died within 48 hours of the injection, damage to axons and terminals of extrinsic origin within the injected region was not apparent. The neuronal degeneration induced by the neurotoxins, observed at both the light and electron microscopic levels, resembled the neuronal degeneration that occurs in the colliculus during normal development. Macrophages were identified in the regions containing degenerating cells. Two to three weeks after the injections of neurotoxin, massive injections of the enzyme, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), were made into the retinorecipient nuclei. After about 24-hour survival time the numbers of retinal ganglion cells were estimated by counting the number of neurons containing HRP reaction products in sample areas distributed in a regular rectangular array across the entire retinal surface. In the animals in which the neurotoxin was injected into the SC during the first 4 postnatal days, there was a substantial reduction (on average 41.5%; the range: 27.5-65.5%) in the normal number (mean value of 113,000--Potts et al.: Dev. Brain Res. 3:481-486, '82) of retinal ganglion cells surviving the period of "naturally occurring ganglion cell death" in the retinae contralateral to the injected SC. By contrast, injections of neurotoxins into the DLG and/or the optic tract of newborn rats did not result in a significant reduction in the numbers of retinal ganglion cells surviving the period of naturally occurring ganglion cell death. The period of sensitivity of retinal ganglion cells to the injection of neurotoxin into the colliculi extends from birth to about the end of the first postnatal week; the greatest sensitivity seems to be restricted to the first 3-4 postnatal days. In the retinae in which the total number (and density) of ganglion cells was substantially reduced by the selective destruction of their target cells, the centro-peripheral difference in the somal diameters of the ganglion cells (apparent in normal animals) was abolished, both amongst the whole population of ganglion cells and amongst the ganglion cells with the largest somata, relatively thick axons, and large-gauge primary dendrites (Class I cells). The number and distribution of the Class I cells in the depleted retinae were, however, unaltered.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
A report was made on the outcome of a four year retrospective study in 27 064 pregnancies, of the clinical efficiency, sensitivity, and specificity of a screening programme for Down's syndrome based on reported strategies related to the measurement of maternal serum alpha fetoprotein. This study identified 27 pregnancies affected by Down's syndrome with a median multiple of the median maternal serum alpha fetoprotein concentration of 0.82. This figure is considerably higher than that obtained from previous reports on this subject. With an age related multiple of the median maternal serum alpha fetoprotein strategy, 30.8% of Down's affected pregnancies were identified as well as 11.6% of unaffected pregnancies. Perhaps a United Kingdom collaborative study should begin to investigate the reasons for such wide population variance in the reports for the median multiple of the median for Down's affected pregnancies. Until such studies are carried out, screening for Down's syndrome based on low maternal serum alpha fetoprotein concentration is premature.
It was postulated that an integration of behavioral-cognitive techniques within a psychodramatic group therapy framework would reduce delinquents' acting-out tendencies and improve ego strength. The population consisted of a control and an experimental group of adolescents aged 14 to 16 of both sexes that were adjudicated delinquent. There were ten adolescents in the control group and initially eleven adolescents in the experimental group (only seven completed the twelve ninety-minute sessions). Both pre- and posttest measures on the Jesness, the High School Personality Questionnaire, and the I-E Scale were administered to the two groups of subjects. The results showed that significant improvement occurred in the delinquents' asocial index (.01 level), ego strength (.05 level), and introversive tendencies (.01 level). This study demonstrated that behavioral contracting, monetary reinforcement, and alternative behavioral rehearsal can be effectively integrated with more traditional psychodramatic techniques to reduce delinquents' acting-out tendencies.
Although human embryo kidney (HEK), muscle (HEM) and lung (HEL) cells are capable of supporting the replication of BK virus (BKV) through passage levels 9, 12 and 12 respectively, only third, fourth and fifth passage level HEK cells were found to be satisfactory for the plaque assay of the virus. BSC-I and VERO cells can also be used for the plaque assay of BKV. However, in HEK cells plaques can be visualized in 20 days (compared to 28 days in BSC-I cells), and since in VERO cells the plaques are poorly defined and the titre about I log10 lower than in either HEK or BSC-I cells, HEK cells were the ones chosen for use.
