1. Ribosomal protein fractions from rabbit reticulocytes and rat liver were prepared by extracting ribosomes with 0.2n-hydrochloric acid or guanidinium chloride and subsequent dialysis. 2. Treatment for 2.5hr. or less with 0.2n-hydrochloric acid dissolved 46-54% of the proteins, which were richer in arginine and lysine and in N-terminal alanine groups and poorer in aspartic acid and glutamic acid and in N-terminal glycine groups than the acid-insoluble proteins. 3. Protein fractions prepared from the guanidinium chloride extract of ribosomes from rat liver were usually more basic than those from rabbit reticulocytes. 4. The ratios lysine: arginine of fractions in the guanidinium chloride extracts were appreciably higher for proteins from rabbit reticulocytes than from rat liver. 5. The concentration of urea and the pH of the gel affected the rate of migration and number of bands in starch-gel electrophoresis.
In the 3 strains of Aspergillus nidulans used, BC reduced survival most and 4HMB least. Similar trends were found when the effect on gene conversion was studied in a diploid strain and point mutation was scored in a haploid strain. None of the compounds had any effect on mitotic segregation.
To characterize volatile organic chemical (VOC) contamination in public water in New Jersey from 1978 through 1990, detailed GIS maps were developed, along with descriptive text and an associated contaminant database, broken into half-year periods. All water providers that served more than 500 service connections were mapped. Contamination status for nine VOCs, including total trihalomethanes (THMs), was estimated for about 90% of the state's population. Many water systems were partitioned into smaller subsystems in order to map service areas that were more homogeneous with regard to water quality in order to minimize exposure misclassification. Data used for this work included test results taken by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection or the water utilities (raw, plant, and distribution system samples), an analysis of probable water use and water flow (based on pumpage, population, system architecture, and advice from the water systems), and information on service area extensions during the period. Using GIS applications, these maps and databases were used to estimate the size of the population exposed to contaminants over time, demonstrating a dramatic decrease in exposed population after the New Jersey Safe Drinking Water Act was signed in 1984.
The effect of treatment with enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) on exercise hemodynamics and myocardial stress perfusion in 27 patients with chronic stable angina was studied. A majority (22/27 or 81%) of patients improved their exercise tolerance after EECP treatment, and a similar percentage (21/27 or 78%) of patients improved their radionuclide stress perfusion images. Post-EECP maximal exercise heart rate and blood pressure, while demonstrating a linear relation with exercise duration, did not increase significantly despite the increased exercise duration. This suggests that the increase in exercise duration after treatment with EECP is due to both improved myocardial perfusion and altered exercise hemodynamics. EECP therapy thus appears to exert a "training' effect, decreasing peripheral vascular resistance and the heart rate response to exercise. Coronary disease patients may improve their exercise tolerance after EECP because of both improved myocardial perfusion and a decrease in cardiac work load.
