A review of the toxicosis and biological properties of the genus Eupatorium.

Eupatorium genus grows wild in many parts of the world. A number of species of Eupatorium are toxic to grazing animals. Milk sickness in humans is caused by ingestion of milk of the animals reared on the pastures infested with Eupatorium rugosum (white snakeroot). While some information is available on the toxins in various species of Eupatorium, ambiguities still persist in extrapolation of the data to field incidence of toxicosis. Eupatorium genus has been used for its medicinal properties for many decades. A number of bioactive natural products have been reported in the extracts of Eupatorium spp. and the genus is a promising bioresource for preparation of drugs and value-added products.

Isolated bilateral paralysis of the soft palate in an adult.

A case of bilateral paralysis of the soft palate occurring in a 42-year-old patient is presented. Idiopathic paralysis of the soft palate as an isolated clinical entity was first described by Edin et al. 1976. Since then 22 similar cases have been reported, all in children and all unilateral. A search of the English language literature has not revealed a case of bilateral palatal palsy in an adult.

Swimming with grommets.

A controlled prospective study was designed to find the relation of otorrhoea with swimming in ears with grommets. The children were allowed to swim in swimming pools without any precautions. They were advised not to swim during an upper respiratory infection. The results show that the incidence of otorrhoea among swimmers and non-swimmers after first 6 weeks post-operatively was remarkably similar.

The dynamics of tetanus epidemiology and control in rural Uttar Pradesh studied through computer simulation.

An epidemiological model is constructed for tetanus. The assumptions as well as the steps involved in the construction of the model, are detailed. The impact of alternate immunisation strategies to control tetanus in rural Uttar Pradesh, is studied using this model. The quantification of the expected decline in incidence and mortality over 30 years, for different control strategies, provides the health planner with valuable information. It is seen that the incidence of tetanus neonatorum and tetanus in adults, as well as deaths due to tetanus, progressively decreases as the level of coverage is increased. The most marked reduction is seen over the initial period of intervention. Mass immunisation of the total population, or of just the females in the reproductive age group, leads to temporary decline in the endemic level. Such models are useful for planning in the health sector in India since, they can be constructed with the limited information available.

Radiotherapy for jugulo-tympanic paragangliomas (glomus jugulare tumours).

Sixty patients with glomus jugulare tumour, seen at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, over forty years, have been reviewed. The term 'jugulo-tympanic paraganglioma' is suggested as a more accurate name for these tumours. The following simple classification is recommended: Group I tumours (tympanic paragangliomas) are those with or without VIIth nerve palsy, but with no other cranial nerve involvement. Group II tumours (jugular paragangliomas) are those with involvement of any cranial nerve other than the VIIth. The method and results of treatment by radiotherapy are discussed. It is concluded that surgery and radiotherapy give comparable results in Group I tumours, but radiotherapy gives superior results in Group II tumours.

Dose distribution around radium arrays used in the treatment of uterine carcinoma.

Measurements have been made to determine the dose distribution around typical arrays of commercially available Campbell type Heyman applicators using thermoluminescent dosimeters. These measurements verify the tables produced by Benner, linking the number of sources used in the so called packing technique for the treatment of uterine carcinoma to an optimum treatment time.

Multivariate analysis of head measurements in Punjabi families.

Four head measurements (head length, head breadth, frontal breadth and head height) have been compared in relatives of different degrees from samples of 200 Punjabi and 125 Belgian families. A method of generalized distances is used which allows examination of the proportions of the head as a whole. The values of the generalized distances between concordant and discordant twins are compared with those between brothers, sisters, siblings, parents-and-children, and parents. The results strongly support the influence of genetic factors, but also demonstrate environmental influence.

Absence of triradius d on the palms of normal people.

Absence of the digital triradius d is a very rare phenomenon, previously only reported in abnormal XXXXY males. During the past few years the anomaly has been found on the palms of three normal females, namely a young English woman and two sisters in the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean. These cases are described and illustrations of the palmar dermatoglyphics presented. The occurrence of such a rare phenomenon in two sisters suggests that it is genetically determined.

Serum protein and red cell enzyme polymorphisms in Oraon tribe, India.

Blood specimens from 134 Oraon, a Dravidian-speaking tribe in Bihar, India, have been tested for haptoglobin, transferrin, ceruloplasmin, phosphoglucomutase, lactate dehydrogenase, albumin, and malate dehydrogenase types by starch gel electrophoresis. Low Hp1 and high TfD gene frequencies emerge.
