[Cytology and phospholipid content of the bronchoalveolar lavage liquid in diffuse interstitial pneumopathies and in sarcoidosis. Apropos of 96 lavages].

The phospholipid content of bronchoalveolar lavage (LBA) has been little studied till now. This work involved 96 LBA on 7 cases of allergic alveolitis, 11 cases of diffuse interstitial fibrosis (FID) and 42 of sarcoidosis. The liquid collected was submitted to a cellular study (cellularity, total and differential) and biochemical (total proteins, total phospholipids separated into their different fractions by chromatography which enabled the identification of phosphatidyl-choline, phosphatidyl-serine and phosphatidyl-inositol in particular). The cytological results were close to the classical data, a rise in the lymphocyte level in allergic alveolitis and active sarcoid, a rise in polymorphonuclear cells in FID. Biochemical analysis showed a fall in total phospholipids for the whole group, the drop being the greatest in the FID. Phosphatidyl-choline, the principle phospholipid of surfactant in normals, was reduced in all three groups of patient when expressed as a percentage of total phospholipids. This fall was greatest with an allergic alveolitis and occurred on a pro rata basis with a rise in phosphatidyl-serine and inositol. The protein phospholipid ratio (PL/P) expressed in micrograms of phospholipid and milligrams of protein fell in a significant fashion in all the pathological groups. This fall was significantly larger in allergic alveolitis than FID and active sarcoid. The PL/P ratio seems to be a good marker of active sarcoid, correlating with the activity of the disease inversely with the lymphocyte level, and was unchanged by steroids unlike the lymphocyte count. A rise in this ratio correlates with an improvement in the radiological and clinical state.

[Experimental study of the patency of rabbit fallopian tubes after section of the isthmus and microsurgical anastomosis].

The authors carried out 45 microsurgical plastic operations in rabbits to study tubal patency. They found patency in 42%. They compared the microscopical appearances that were found later in relationship to the type of suture material (Vicryl absorbable or Prolene non-absorbable). The difference seems to be significant because of the inflammatory action that occurs. This was shown in 17% of cases where absorbable material was used and in 36% where non-absorbable was used.

[Vasa-vasorum (author's transl)].

More than a common descriptive interest, this researches about vasa-vasorum have been carried on to give some anatomical basis, to the part acted by those vessels in arterial wall life. Microdissections, X-rays diaphanisation enable us to systematize even in human kind than in animal species, the main aspects of this vascularisation. The conception of a double irrigation, from the lumen and from the vasa of the blood vessels, and the presence of a venous and lymphatic drainage, can give us the basis of an interpretation of the beginning of the main arterial diseases.

[Kurloff's thymic inclusion : action on rat gonads in culture].

Thymic and splenic extracts rich in FOA-KURLOFF (F.K.) body cells, obtained from guinea-pigs treated with oestrogen, were added to rat testis or ovaries in culture. Controls were prepared with extracts from thymus and spleen of non treated animals and from kidneys of treated or non treated animals. After five hours the level of sexual hormones and the germinal cells were studied. The F.K. substance has no effect on germinal cells and on progesterone and testosterone secretion. The F.K. substance induces a significative decrease of oestrogen secretion. In an other paper we established that F.K. bodies induced a hyperactivity of internal theca folliculi and of ovarian interstitial cells. It is a false image of activity in connection with a hypersecretion of FSH. The F.K. substance inhibits oestrogen synthesis.

[Action of thymic extracts on the growth of different cell populations in vitro].

Thymic, splenic and renal cellular extracts were obtained by tissular grinding and ultra centrifugation, from animals having undergone diverse hormonal treatments. These extracts were added to different cellular populations in culture (carcinomatous HeLa strain, established MRCs strain, primo-culture of human foetal lung strain). The thymic extracts of non treated animals and the splenic extracts rich in FK substance from intact guinea pigs treated by oestrogenes or FSH, provoque an inhibition of tumoral cell growth. The most important effects are obtained with thymus extracts rich in FK substance. The FK substance seems capable of concentrating certain antitumoral thymic fractions.
