Tunable two-dimensional hexagonal phase array in domain-engineered Z-cut lithium niobate crystal.

An optical phase array with tunable phase step is demonstrated. The phase array consists of a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice of inverted ferroelectric domains fabricated on a Z-cut lithium niobate substrate. The electro-optically tunable phase step is obtained by the application of an external electric field along the z axis of the crystal via transparent electrodes. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented, showing that a tunable and flexible adaptive optical illuminator device can be realized by combining the electro-optic tunability with the Talbot effect. Generation of a multiplicity of light patterns is shown.

Two-dimensional mapping of electro-optic phase retardation in lithium niobate crystals by digital holography.

We demonstrate accurate two-dimensional mapping of the phase retardation induced by the electro-optic effect in lithium niobate crystals. Off-axis digital holography is used to investigate congruent z-cut crystals. The spatially resolved optical path difference is interferometrically measured while a linearly rising voltage ramp is applied to the crystal. This procedure provides information on the uniformity of crystals' electro-optic properties and offers the ability to detect the presence of defects that is of fundamental importance for reliable processing of photonic devices.

Frequency-comb-based absolute frequency measurements in the mid-infrared with a difference-frequency spectrometer.

We demonstrate the possibility of extending the well-established metrological performance of optical frequency-comb synthesizers to the mid-IR region by phase locking the pump and signal lasers of a difference-frequency source to two near-IR teeth of an optical comb. An uncertainty of 800 Hz (1.1 x 10(-11)) in the absolute frequencies of CO2 transitions near 4.2 microm has been measured by cavity-enhanced saturated-absorption spectroscopy. Prospects for the creation of a new dense set of high-quality molecular frequency standards in the IR are discussed.

Absolute frequency measurements of the 2(3)S1-->2(3)P 0,1,2 atomic helium transitions around 1083 nm.

We measure the frequency of the 2(3)S1-->2(3)P(0,1,2) transitions of helium in a metastable beam using an optical frequency comb synthesizer. The relative uncertainty of these measurements ranging from 5x10(-11) to 7x10(-12) is, to our knowledge, the most precise result for any optical helium transition. Considering existing accurate values of the 2(3)P fine structure, we measure a centroid value of the 2(3)S-2(3)P frequency of 276 736 495 624.6(2.4) kHz, improving the previous interferometric measurement by 30 times. New accurate values of the 2(3)S-2(3)P and 2(3)P Lamb-shift energies are obtained.

Spatial mode control of radiation generated by frequency difference in periodically poled crystals.

We demonstrate the possibility to control the spatial mode of a narrow-linewidth, continuous-wave, infrared radiation beam generated by difference frequency in a periodically poled crystal. This can be achieved by acting directly on a few experimental parameters. We show that hollow beams can be generated. A numerical routine has been developed and results agree with experimental observations, without requiring any free parameters. The relevance of these results for high-resolution spectroscopy and atom manipulation is discussed.

Search for exchange-antisymmetric states for spin-0 particles at the 10(-11) level.

We set a new upper limit of 1.7x10(-11) to the probability that two spin-0 16O nuclei are in forbidden exchange-antisymmetric states, testing the validity of fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. A newly designed difference-frequency spectrometer is used to look for the existence of these states. The experimental test was performed by tuning the spectrometer across a molecular transition of 12C 16O (2) belonging to the rovibrational band at 4.25 microm, connecting the forbidden states (00(0)0,J = 25) and (00(0)1,J = 26).
