[Arterial hypertension in clinical practice].

Based on their epidemiological survey in the South Moravian region where 64,083 men and women, mean age 43.1 years, were examined, the authors submit the results of screening, prevalence, control and complications of hypertension. They draw attention to the high rate and almost 50% detection of new patients, in particular of productive age. The results indicate the high risk of arterial hypertension in the genesis of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease, on the inadequate control of the disease in field practice and the favourable effect on the prevalence of cerebrovascular disease when effective therapy is used, as apparent from a five-year perspective study. The authors emphasize the significant role of secondary prevention on the course, prognosis and complications of this disease of the circulation.

[The significance of plasmapheresis in the treatment of acute liver failure].

The authors describe the use of plasmapheresis in the treatment of acute hepatic failure in viral hepatitis with a fulminant course. Plasmapheresis was used with regard to severe trombocytopenia and manifestations of haemorrhagic diathesis. In the discussion they draw attention to the importance of supportive methods in the treatment of acute hepatic failure and to perspectives of liver transplantations in this context.

[The present level of control of hypertension in the South Moravian Region].

The authors present the results of a cross sectional and prospective investigation of hypertension in the South Moravian region. The inadequate control of high blood pressure is according to the authors due to inadequate screening, unsuitable dosage and selection of antihypertensive drugs, lack of confidence in medicamentous treatment, inadequate cooperation of doctors and patients, and frequently lack of perception of the disease. The authors mention also the importance of the unbalanced supplies in previous years. They refute objections that screening and treatment of hypertension is time consuming and expensive and consider prevention the prerequisite of all efforts to reduce the morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases.
