Triglyceride fatty acids confirm a change in dietary fat.

The pattern of triglyceride fatty acids has been shown to alter rapidly when normalipaemic individuals eating a normal 'western' diet rich in saturated fats were changed to a diet low in cholesterol and high in polyunsaturated fats. The proportion of triglyceride linoleate was used to monitor the adherence to dietary advice of eleven primary hypercholesterolaemic patients (Type II) presenting to a lipid clinic. Patients adhering to diet showed a fall in serum cholesterol and a rise in triglyceride linoleate; recalcitrant patients showed little change. The estimation of triglyceride linoleate may be an important adjunct to clinical judgement in assessing dietary resistance before resource to drug therapy in hypercholesterolaemic patients.

The need for integrated linkages and long-term monitoring of mercury in Canada.

A nation-wide ecosystem science network for Canada was formed in 1994. At that time, mercury was a re-emerging issue in Canada and the Coordinating Office for the network sought collaboration to assess the issue. The key mechanisms by which the network has added value in addressing this issue are: 1) Information Dissemination, the network has organised, facilitated and co-hosted a number of regional. national and international mercury events (meetings, conferences and workshops) which have served to bring the expertise together, the network also disseminates information on it's web page. and the Coordinating Office hosts an annual National Science Conference: 2) Collaborative Mercury Monitoring, network partners advocated the need for a single hemispheric mercury network which resulted in the development of a compatible Canada-U.S. mercury deposition network, which may also be expanded into Mexico, and 3) Environmental Reporting, the network has collaborated with others to report on current mercury findings through initiatives such as the 1998 Northeast States and Eastern Canadian Mercury Study, a 1999 Mercury Case Study and is presently a partner in the University of Quebec's proposal to form a Collaborative Mercury Ecosystem Research Network in Canada.

Dietary protein energy supplementation of pregnant Asian mothers at Sorrento, Birmingham. II: Selective during third trimester only.

Unselective dietary protein energy supplementation of Asian mothers at Sorrento Maternity Hospital did not enhance intrauterine growth. The effect of selective supplementation was therefore studied. Forty-five mothers who at 28 weeks were known to be nutritionally at risk (triceps increment less than or equal to 20 microns/week between 18 and 28 weeks) received one of three supplements during the third trimester: (a) vitamins only--a multivitamin sachet daily containing vitamins A, B, C, and D; (b) energy--42-125 MJ (10 000-30 000 kcal), all from carbohydrate, plus vitamins; (c) protein energy--energy and vitamins as before, but with 5-10% of energy from milk protein. Eighty-three mothers regarded as adequately nourished at 28 weeks also received one of the three supplements. In the nutritionally at-risk mothers the protein energy supplement was associated with a heavier crude birth weight and heavier weight for gestational age. Supplementation did not lead to improved intrauterine growth in those mothers who were adequately nourished. The differential effect of supplementation depending on the mothers' nutritional state during the second trimester may explain apparently conflicting results of other studies where some have shown a substantial effect of supplementation and others only a small effect. This effect of intervention is further evidence that "poor nutrition" contributes to poor intrauterine growth in selected mothers, even in developed countries.
