[A case of cryptosporidiosis in breeding laying hens with Marek's disease].

The simultaneous occurrence of Marek's disease and cryptosporidiosis in two flocks of rearing pullets on a multi-age farm with rearing-pullets and layers, is reported. This is the first report of cryptosporidiosis in rearing pullets in the Netherlands and also the first time that the combination of this infection with Marek's disease is mentioned.

[A case of common salt poisoning in slaughtering pigs].

Poisoning with common salt is one of the most frequent forms of poisoning in finishing pigs. As a rule, this is due to too much salt in the feed, in combination with a limited supply of drinking water. When a diagnosis of common salt poisoning is established, the animals will have to be rehydrated by degrees. Animals showing clinical symptoms have a bad prognosis. A case of sodium chloride poisoning is reported in the following paper.

[Chondroma in a sheep].

A chondroma localized in the last two ribs at one-third of the distance from the spinous process to the sternum, and approximately 35 cm in diameter, is reported. The ewe was about four to five years of age and in fairly good condition. Apparently it was a rare case; a condition of this type was not previously reported in the Netherlands. Only two cases of chondrosarcoma (also in the costal arch) out of 129,981 autopsies are reported (1).

[Sleeper syndrome in beef cattle; meningoencephalitis caused by Haemophilus somnus].

Central nervous system disturbances, among which somnolence was a particularly marked feature, were observed in a herd of four-month-old beef cattle. Laboratory studies showed that the clinical picture was due to meningo-encephalitis, from which Haemophilus somnus was isolated. Other animals of this herd showed a serological response with regard to the micro-organism. The importance of further studies on the incidence of this infection in the Netherlands is stressed.
