[Adolf Strümpell and the issue of "traumatic neurosis"].

By his introduction of the term "psychisches Trauma", Strümpell exerted an influence on Oppenheims concept of traumatic neurosis. What he termed "Begehrensvorstellungen", too, had an important part to play in the ensuing discussion on the origin of traumatic neuroses. That the two sides in dispute nonetheless appealed to the authority of the internist and neurologist Strümpell in matters of expert opinion, is an indication of his discernment in these problematic open questions.

[Status and development of neurology].

In view of the foundation of a section Neurology in the Society for Psychiatry and Neurology of the GDR, the present situation of neurology in the country is discussed. The formation of such a section comes up to the stage of development reached and the requirements of a further development of neurology. The joining of the neurologically active and the neurologically interested persons in one section serves the promotion of scientific life and the further development of the cultivation of scientific relations with partner socientific and neighbouring disciplines and, last but not least, the improvement of the medical care of neurologic patients.

[Medical prerequisites for the rehabilitation of adult epileptics].

The rehabilitation of adult epileptics may be substantially improved by (1) having all patients suffering from attacks carefully examined by specialists; (2) perfecting methods of diagnosis with the goal of drastically reducing the number of inexplainable cases of epilepsy; (3) making further progress in therapy and improving the present methods of checking the results of treatment; (4) and removing prejudices against both epilepsy and epileptics.

[The development of neurology since A. v. Strümpell and its relation to internal medicine].

A. v. Strümpell is appreciated as one of those internal specialists who inaugurated neurology in Germany and furthered decisively its development. Issuing from the opinions which Strümpell expressed at the end of his life the further way of the German neurology up to an independent clinical discipline is described in short. Here the partly historically, partly really proved relations of neurology to internal medicine as well as to psychiatry are taken into consideration. Integration is characterized as an actual request, since with progressing differentiation and specialisation of medicine the adherence to the traditional structures and borders of the specialities becomes more and more questionable.

[Pattern-sensitive epilepsy with an unusual triggering mechanism].

A case of pattern-sensitive epilepsy is reported which is characterized in that the pattern is formed from images of human faces with clearly recognizable eyes. Similarities to previously reported cases of pattern-sensitive epilepsy as well as dissimilarities from those cases are discussed.

[Doubtfullness of the diagnosis diabetic neuropathy].

The diabetic neuropathy is sufficiently to be defined neither from the point of view of diabetes nor from neurological findings. There are no diagnostic criteria appliable to the individual case. Therefore, the diagnosis diabetic neuropathy is to be valuated as exclusion diagnosis. It presumes above all a careful clarification of the neurological syndrome present taking into consideration all diseases of muscles, nerves and spinal cord which are of importance in differential diagnosis. Instead of issuing from the alternative diabetogenic or nondiabetogenic, the possibility of pathogenetic combinations should rather be taken into consideration. It seems to be suitable to avoid the name diabetic neuropathy in practice and to speak only of a neuropathy or polyneuropathy (which is possibly to be described more exactly) in diabetes.
