Meeting the challenge of finding resources for ophthalmic nurses on the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web ("the Web") is a macrocosm of resources that can be overwhelming. Often the sheer volume of material available causes one to give up in despair before finding information of any use. The Web is such a popular resource that it cannot be ignored. Two of the biggest challenges to finding good information on the Web are knowing where to start and judging whether the information gathered is pertinent and credible. This article addresses these two challenges and introduces the reader to a variety of ophthalmology and vision science resources on the World Wide Web.

Databases, Factual↗

Searching for articles in the medical literature.

Finding articles in the medical literature involves consulting indexes and abstracts either in print or on computer. Searching the literature involves: defining the information need, selecting the proper database or index, breaking the need into its component parts, identifying synonyms for each concept using a thesaurus and other search aids, prioritizing concepts, constructing logical relationships between concepts, and selecting the source. Searching in the correct database or index is also important. Knowledge of basic information search techniques and principles will benefit the searcher and increase the likelihood that the search results will be useful.

Abstracting and Indexing↗

Finding information in the medical literature.

There is such an enormous amount of information available to ophthalmic nurses, it is often intimidating to find the single item of information needed. Informal, word-of-mouth information sources are convenient but may also be incorrect or incomplete. There are a variety of formal information sources: dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, directories, textbooks, annuals, and journals articles. Journal articles are probably the most important literature in healthcare because of their currency. Learning to use the medical library effectively and using the services of a medical librarian can help one take advantage of this vast amount of information.
