Novel coexistence of superconductivity with two distinct magnetic orders.

The heavy fermion system exhibits properties that range from an incommensurate antiferromagnet for small to an exotic superconductor on the Ir-rich end of the phase diagram. At intermediate where antiferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity, two types of magnetic order are observed: the incommensurate one of and a new, commensurate antiferromagnetism that orders separately. The coexistence of -electron superconductivity with two distinct -electron magnetic orders is unique among unconventional superconductors, adding a new variety to the usual coexistence found in magnetic superconductors.

Perturbing the superconducting planes in CeCoIn5 by Sn substitution.

In contrast to substitution on the Co or Ce site, Sn substitution has a remarkably strong effect on superconductivity in CeCoIn5-xSnx, with Tc-->0 beyond only 3.6% Sn. Instead of being randomly distributed on in-plane and out-of-plane In sites, extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements show the Sn atoms preferentially substitute within the Ce-In plane. This result highlights the importance of the In1 site to impurity scattering and clearly demonstrates the two-dimensional nature of superconductivity in CeCoIn5.

4f-electron localization in CexLa 1-xM In5 with M=Co, Rh, or Ir.

de Haas-van Alphen measurements on Ce(x)La(1-x)MIn(5) yield contrasting types of behavior that depend on whether M=Co and Ir or M=Rh. A stronger x-dependent scattering in the case of M=Co and Ir is suggestive of a stronger relative coupling, J/W, of the conduction electrons to the 4f electrons, which would then account for the development of a heavy composite Fermi-liquid state as x-->1. The failure of a composite Fermi-liquid state to form for any x in the case of M= Rh is shown to be inconsistent with theoretical models that propose antiferromagnetism to result from spin-density-wave formation.

Avoided antiferromagnetic order and quantum critical point in CeCoIn5.

We measured the specific heat and resistivity of heavy fermion CeCoIn5 between the superconducting critical field H(c2)=5 T and 9 T, with the field in the [001] direction, and at temperatures down to 50 mK. At 5 T the data show a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior down to the lowest temperatures. At the field above 8 T the data exhibit a crossover from the Fermi liquid to a non-Fermi liquid behavior. We analyzed the scaling properties of the specific heat and compared both the resistivity and the specific heat with the predictions of a spin-fluctuation theory. Our analysis leads us to suggest that the NFL behavior is due to incipient antiferromagnetism (AFM) in CeCoIn5 with the quantum critical point in the vicinity of H(c2). Below H(c2) the AFM phase which competes with the paramagnetic ground state is superseded by the superconducting transition.

Possible Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state in CeCoIn5.

We report specific heat measurements of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 in the vicinity of the superconducting critical field H(c2), with magnetic fields in the [110], [100], and [001] directions, and at temperatures down to 50 mK. The superconducting phase transition changes from second to first order for fields above 10 T for H parallel [110] and H parallel [100]. In the same range of magnetic fields, we observe a second specific heat anomaly within the superconducting state. We interpret this anomaly as a signature of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) inhomogeneous superconducting state. We obtain similar results for H parallel [001], with the FFLO state occupying a smaller part of the phase diagram.

Low-frequency spin dynamics in the CeMIn5 materials.

We measure the spin lattice relaxation of the planar In(1) nuclei in the CeMIn5 materials, extract quantitative information about the low energy spin dynamics of the lattice of Ce moments in both CeRhIn5 and CeCoIn5, and identify a crossover in the normal state. Above a temperature T(*) the Ce lattice exhibits "Kondo gas" behavior characterized by local fluctuations of independently screened moments; below T(*) both systems exhibit a "Kondo liquid" regime in which interactions between the local moments contribute to the spin dynamics. Both the antiferromagnetic and superconducting ground states in these systems emerge from the Kondo liquid regime. Our analysis provides strong evidence for quantum criticality in CeCoIn5.

Superconductivity and quantum criticality in CeCoIn5.

Electrical resistivity measurements on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 at pressures to 4.2 GPa reveal a strong crossover in transport properties near P(*) approximately 1.6 GPa, where T(c) is a maximum. The temperature-pressure phase diagram constructed from these data provides a natural connection to cuprate physics, including the possible existence of a pseudogap.

First-order superconducting phase transition in CeCoIn5.

The superconducting phase transition in heavy fermion CeCoIn5 (T(c)=2.3 K in zero field) becomes first order when the magnetic field H parallel [001] is greater than 4.7 T, and the transition temperature is below T0 approximately 0.31T(c). The change from second order at lower fields is reflected in strong sharpening of both specific heat and thermal expansion anomalies associated with the phase transition, a strong magnetocaloric effect, and a steplike change in the sample volume. This effect is due to Pauli limiting in a type-II superconductor, and was predicted theoretically in the mid-1960s.

Unconventional metallic magnetism in LaCrSb3.

Neutron-diffraction measurements in LaCrSb3 show a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattices below T(C)=126 K, with ordered moments of 1.65(4) and 0.49(4)mu(B)/formula unit, respectively (T=10 K), and a spin-reorientation transition at approximately 95 K. No clear peak or step was observed in the specific heat at T(C). Coexisting localized and itinerant spins are suggested.

Intersite coupling effects in a kondo lattice.

The La dilution of the Kondo lattice CeCoIn5 is studied. The scaling laws found for the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat reveal two well-separated energy scales, corresponding to the single-impurity Kondo temperature T(K) and an intersite spin-liquid temperature T(*). The Ce-dilute alloy has the expected Fermi liquid ground state, while the specific heat and resistivity in the dense Kondo regime exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior, which scales with T(*). These observations indicate that the screening of the magnetic moments in the lattice involves antiferromagnetic intersite correlations with a larger energy scale in comparison with the Kondo impurity case.

Field distribution and flux-line depinning in MgB (2).

We report the first observation of the field distribution and flux-line lattice (FLL) depinning in the vortex-state (VS) of a type-II superconductor probed by conduction electron spin resonance (CESR). CESR was performed in MgB (2) (T(c) approximately 39 K) at 4.1 GHz (1455 Oe) and 9.5 GHz (3390 Oe). The field distribution, n(H), and a standard deviation of sigma approximately 14 Oe (at 28 K/4.1 GHz and at 7 K/9.5 GHz) were inferred, respectively, from the distortion and broadening of the CESR in the VS. For both frequencies, the FLL depinning temperature was determined.

Two energy scales and slow crossover in YbAl3.

Experimental results for the susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, 4f occupation number, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance for single crystals of the intermediate valence (IV) compound YbAl3 show that, in addition to the Kondo temperature scale T(K) approximately 670 K, there is a low temperature scale T(coh) approximately 30-40 K for the onset of Fermi liquid coherence. Furthermore, the crossover from the low temperature Fermi liquid regime to the high temperature local moment regime is slower than predicted by the Anderson impurity model. We suggest that these effects are generic for IV compounds and we discuss them in terms of the theory of the Anderson lattice.

Mixed lattice and electronic states in high-temperature superconductors.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are presented which show the abrupt development of new oxygen lattice vibrations near the doping-induced metal-insulator transition in La(2--x)Sr(x)CuO(4). A direct correlation is established between these lattice modes and the electronic susceptibility (as measured by photoemission) inferring that such modes mix strongly with charge fluctuations. This electron-lattice coupling can be characterized as a localized one-dimensional response of the lattice to short-ranged metallic charge fluctuations.

Unconventional superconductivity in CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5: specific heat and thermal conductivity studies.

Low temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on the ambient pressure heavy fermion superconductors CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 reveal power law temperature dependences of these quantities below T(c). The low temperature specific heat in both CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 includes T2 terms, consistent with the presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap. The thermal conductivity data present a T-linear term consistent with the universal limit (CeIrIn5), and a low temperature T3 variation in the clean limit (CeCoIn5), also in accord with prediction for an unconventional superconductor with lines of nodes.
