Environmental enrichment reduces the function of D1 dopamine receptors in the prefrontal cortex of the rat.

Environmental enrichment produces changes in spontaneous and psychostimulant-induced motor activity. Dopamine in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), through the activation of D1 receptors, has been suggested to play a role in modulating motor activity. The present study investigated the effects of environmental enrichment on spontaneous motor activity, prefrontal acetylcholine release following local D1 receptor stimulation and D1 receptor expression in the PFC. Male wistar rats (3 months of age) were housed in enriched or isolated conditions during 90 days. Animals were then implanted with guide cannulae to perform microdialysis experiments in the PFC. Spontaneous motor activity and acetylcholine extracellular concentrations were monitored simultaneously. Also spontaneous motor activity was measured in an open field. On completion of the experiments, the density of D1 receptors in the PFC was studied by immunocytochemistry. Rats housed in an enriched environment showed significantly lower spontaneous motor activity in the open field compared to isolated animals. Perfusion of the D1 agonist SKF38393 (50 microM; 40 min) in the PFC produced long lasting increases of spontaneous motor activity and of local dialysate concentrations of acetylcholine in both groups of rats. However, increases of both motor activity and acetylcholine concentrations were significantly lower in enriched compared to isolated animals. Moreover, the density of D1 receptors in the PFC was significantly reduced in animals housed in an enriched environment. These results are the first evidence suggesting that environmental enrichment during adult life changes the function of D1 dopamine receptors in the PFC.

Effectiveness of virosomal subunit influenza vaccine in preventing influenza-related illnesses and its social and economic consequences in children aged 3-14 years: a prospective cohort study.

To evaluate the effectiveness of a virosomal subunit influenza vaccine in preventing influenza-related illnesses and its social and economic consequences in children aged 3-14 years, a prospective cohort study was carried out during the 2004-2005 influenza season in 11 private pediatric clinics in the Barcelona metropolitan area. One dose of a virosomal subunit inactivated influenza vaccine (Inflexal V Berna) was given during September and October 2004 to healthy children aged 3-14 years attended in 5 of the 11 clinics. Who comprised the vaccinated cohort (n=966). The non-vaccinated cohort (n=985) was comprised of children attended in the other six clinics. Informed consent was obtained from all parents. The follow up was performed between 1 November 2004 and 31 March 2005. Using a self-administered questionnaire, information was collected from parents or guardians on any type of acute, febrile respiratory illness suffered by their children during the study period, including antibiotic use, and absence from school or work-loss of parents as a result of the illness. RT-PCR (influenza A+B+C) was carried out on pharyngeal and nasal samples obtained from children attended by pediatricians during this period in these clinics with the following symptoms: fever> or =38.5 degrees lasting at least 72h, cough or sore throat (influenza-like illness). Adjusted vaccination effectiveness was 58.6% (95% CI 49.2-66.3) in preventing acute febrile respiratory illnesses, 75.1% (95% CI 61.0-84.1) in preventing cases of influenza-like illnesses and 88.4% (95% CI 49.2-97.3) in preventing laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A. The adjusted vaccination effectiveness in reducing antibiotic use (18.6%, 95% CI -4.2 to 3.64), absence from school (57.8%, 95% CI 47.9-65.9) and work-loss of parents (33.3%, 95% CI 8.9-51.2) in children affected by an acute febrile respiratory illness was somewhat lower. Vaccination of children aged 3-14 years in pediatric practices with one dose of virosomal subunit inactivated influenza vaccine has the potential to considerably reduce the health and social burdens caused by influenza-related illnesses.

[Right main bronchus obstruction in a patient intubated with a left double-lumen tube for thoracic aortic surgery].

A 29-year-old woman with a tubular thoracic aortic graft prosthesis, placed after repair of a postcoarctation site aneurysm, was reoperated due to fungal infection of the prosthesis. A left thoracotomy was performed and single lung ventilation established through a double lumen tube followed by extracorporeal circulation (ECC), deep hypothermia, and cessation of blood circulation. The venous drainage tube was placed in the right pulmonary artery and arterial return was located in the descending aorta. After replacement of the prosthesis and interruption of ECC, attempts to ventilate the right lung failed. Fiberoptic examination revealed that the carina and tracheal wall completely occluded the opening of the right main bronchus. ECC was interrupted and the left lung was ventilated, but after withdrawal of the tube from the pulmonary artery and repositioning the patient in supine decubitus, oxygenation and right lung ventilation improved. The patient was extubated after 20 hours and discharged home 6 weeks later.

Growth inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes by a nonbacteriocinogenic Carnobacterium piscicola.

AIMS: This study elucidates the mechanisms by which a nonbacteriocinogenic Carnobacterium piscicola inhibits growth of Listeria monocytogenes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Listeria monocytogenes was exposed to live cultures of a bacteriocin-negative variant of C. piscicola A9b in co-culture, in a diffusion chamber system, and to a cell-free supernatant. Suppression of maximum cell density (0-3.5 log units) of L. monocytogenes was proportional to initial levels of C. pisciola (10(3)-10(7) CFU ml(-1)). Cell-to-cell contact was not required to cause inhibition. The cell-free C. piscicola supernatant caused a decrease in L. monocytogenes maximum cell density, which was abolished by glucose addition but not by amino acid, vitamin or mineral addition. The fermentate also gave rise to a longer lag phase and a reduction in growth rate. These effects were independent of glucose and may have been caused by acetate production by C. piscicola. 2D gel-electrophoretic patterns of L. monocytogenes exposed to C. piscicola or to L. monocytogenes fermentate did not differ. Treatment with C. piscicola fermentate resulted in down-regulation (twofold) of genes involved in purine- or pyrimidine metabolism, and up-regulation (twofold) of genes from the regulon for vitamin B12 biosynthesis and propanediol and ethanolamine utilization. CONCLUSIONS: A nonbacteriocinogenic C. piscicola reduced growth of L. monocytogenes partly by glucose depletion. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Understanding the mechanism of microbial interaction enhances prediction of growth in mixed communities as well as use of bioprotective principles for food preservation.

[Travelling immigrants].

OBJECTIVES: To characterise travelling immigrants and the international movements they undertake. To identify the risk journeys that this population makes and to assess the international preventive activities for them compared with those for autochthonous travellers. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational study. SETTING: Unit of International Health (UIH) Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona), in the Barcelonès Nord i Maresme Health Area, Primary Care Division of the Catalan Institute of Health. PARTICIPANTS: Patients seen between June 1999 and June 2002 (n=1163) at the UIH. They were divided into two groups, depending on their origins: those born inside (autochthonous group; no=1019) or outside (immigrant group; n1=144) the European Union. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Age, country of origin, length of residence in Spain, interval between consultation and journey, reason for journey, destination, duration of the journey, kind of journey, stay in rural or isolated area, exposure to malaria, vaccinations and anti-malaria chemoprophylaxis prescribed, and overall risk of journey. RESULTS: Immigrants spent more time abroad than autochthonous people (mean 43.5 days; 95% CI, 37.9-49.1; and 15.8 days, 95% CI, 14.9-16.7, respectively; P<.0001). Periods between the journey and the consultation at the UIH were generally similar in the two groups (mean of 26.8 days for immigrants and 30.41 days for autochthonous people; ns), although the immigrants consulted more often in periods of less than 15 and 7 days (P<.005). 31.9% of immigrants stayed in areas of high malaria transmission (95% CI, 24.4%-39.6%) vs 21.3% (95% CI, 18.8%-23.8%) of autochthonous people (P=.04). Overall, immigrants made more risk journeys than autochthonous people (54.8% vs 43.1%; P<.01). No significant differences between the two groups were found in terms of quality in the administration of the international vaccinations prescribed. Compliance with the guidelines for anti-malaria chemoprophylaxis was less in the immigrant group than in the autochthonous one (36% vs 84%; P<.005). CONCLUSIONS: The immigrant group in our environment needs to be thought of as a risk group for catching and importing tropical diseases during their international movements. They form a population for whom international preventive measures should be prioritized.

Three-week schedule of irinotecan and cisplatin in advanced non-small cell lung cancer: a multicentre phase II study.

A phase II multicentre study of a 3-week schedule of irinotecan (CPT-11) and cisplatin providing the highest recommended dose intensity of both agents in combination, was conducted in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Seventy-four stage IIIB (not suitable for radiotherapy) or stage IV NSCLC patients were enrolled to receive CPT-11 200 mg/m(2) i.v. and cisplatin 80 mg/m(2) i.v. on day 1 every 3 weeks. Relative dose-intensities for CPT-11 and cisplatin were 92 and 95%, respectively. No complete responses were observed. Twenty-five patients out of 73 obtained a partial response (34.2%). Partial responses were confirmed in 18 patients (24.7%: 95% CI, 15.3-36.1%). Median survival overall was 8.2 months, 9.7 months for patients with baseline performance status (PS) 0 and 1, and 4 months for patients with PS 2. The 1-year survival rate was 31%. Major clinical toxicities were grade 3 and 4 delayed diarrhoea (29% of patients) and febrile neutropenia (14% of patients). In conclusion, the present once-every-3-week schedule of CPT-11 and cisplatin is feasible and active in PS 0-1 advanced NSCLC patients, but results do not seem superior to those reported with other schedules.

Sequential dose-dense paclitaxel followed by topotecan in untreated extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer: a Spanish Lung Cancer Group phase II study.

BACKGROUND: Poor survival rates in extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients prompted us to evaluate a sequential dose-dense schedule of paclitaxel followed by topotecan. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-three patients with previously untreated, extensive-stage SCLC received three cycles of paclitaxel 250 mg/m(2) over 3 h every 14 days followed by three cycles of topotecan 2.5 mg/m(2) for 5 days every 21 days. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor was given after every cycle. Patients progressing at any time and those not achieving complete response (CR) subsequently received four cycles of standard-dose etoposide-cisplatin. RESULTS: A total of 118 cycles of paclitaxel were administered with minimal hematological toxicity. Grade 2/3 peripheral neuropathy was observed in 21% of patients. Response rate to paclitaxel was 48.8%, and 25.6% had stable disease (SD). Thirty-two patients achieving SD or response to paclitaxel subsequently received a total of 90 topotecan cycles. Topotecan-related toxicities included febrile neutropenia in 15.6% of patients with one toxic death, grade 3/4 anemia in 25% of patients and grade 3/4 thrombocytopenia in 31.3%. Non-hematological toxicities were mild. At completion of sequential paclitaxel-topotecan treatment the overall response rate was 55.8% (22 partial response, two CRs). Median survival for all patients was 10.5 months and median progression-free survival was 8.5 months. CONCLUSIONS: Sequential treatment with dose-dense paclitaxel followed by topotecan is feasible despite significant hematological toxicity during topotecan treatment. This schedule is an active regimen in extensive-stage SCLC and merits further investigation.

[Recovery of lung function after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: the role of postoperative pain].

OBJECTIVES: Lung function has been shown to deteriorate after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). The present study evaluated 1) the rate of recovery after LC, and 2) the pathogenic role of postoperative pain in functional deterioration. DESIGN: Lung function was measured 24 hours before LC, upon hospital discharge (48-72 h after LC), and 10 days later. All patients received metamizol after LC until discharge (2 g every 6 h i.v.). Half the patients (analgesia group) received tramadol (150 mg i.m.) 30 minutes before lung function testing on the day of hospital discharge. The remaining patients constituted the control group. PATIENTS: Twenty healthy subjects (53 4 years old) undergoing LC for gall bladder removal. All signed informed consent forms. Measures and outcomes: Patient characteristics and preoperative lung function results were similar in both groups. LC duration and postoperative course were also similar in both groups. All were discharged without complications within 72 hours after LC. Lung function upon discharge (FVC, FEV1, TLC, PaO2 and AaPO2) had deteriorated in both groups (p<0.001). Deterioration was less marked in the analgesia group (p < 0.05). Ten days later, lung function had normalized for all subjects. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that after LC, 1) lung function is still abnormal when the patient is discharged from hospital, 2) lung function has fully recovered within 10 days, and 3) postoperative pain contributes significantly to temporary deterioration in lung function.

Comparative genomics of Listeria species.

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen with a high mortality rate that has also emerged as a paradigm for intracellular parasitism. We present and compare the genome sequences of L. monocytogenes (2,944,528 base pairs) and a nonpathogenic species, L. innocua (3,011,209 base pairs). We found a large number of predicted genes encoding surface and secreted proteins, transporters, and transcriptional regulators, consistent with the ability of both species to adapt to diverse environments. The presence of 270 L. monocytogenes and 149 L. innocua strain-specific genes (clustered in 100 and 63 islets, respectively) suggests that virulence in Listeria results from multiple gene acquisition and deletion events.

Identification and mutagenesis by allelic exchange of choE, encoding a cholesterol oxidase from the intracellular pathogen Rhodococcus equi.

The virulence mechanisms of the facultative intracellular parasite Rhodococcus equi remain largely unknown. Among the candidate virulence factors of this pathogenic actinomycete is a secreted cholesterol oxidase, a putative membrane-damaging toxin. We identified and characterized the gene encoding this enzyme, the choE monocistron. Its protein product, ChoE, is homologous to other secreted cholesterol oxidases identified in Brevibacterium sterolicum and Streptomyces spp. ChoE also exhibits significant similarities to putative cholesterol oxidases encoded by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae. Genetic tools for use with R. equi are poorly developed. Here we describe the first targeted mutagenesis system available for this bacterium. It is based on a suicide plasmid, a selectable marker (the aacC4 apramycin resistance gene from Salmonella), and homologous recombination. The choE allele was disrupted by insertion of the aacC4 gene, cloned in pUC19 and introduced by electroporation in R. equi. choE recombinants were isolated at frequencies between 10(-2) and 10(-3). Twelve percent of the recombinants were double-crossover choE mutants. The choE mutation was associated with loss of cooperative (CAMP-like) hemolysis with sphingomyelinase-producing bacteria (Listeria ivanovii). Functional complementation was achieved by expression of choE from pVK173-T, a pAL5000 derivative conferring hygromycin resistance. Our data demonstrate that ChoE is an important cytolytic factor for R. equi. The highly efficient targeted mutagenesis procedure that we used to generate choE isogenic mutants will be a valuable tool for the molecular analysis of R. equi virulence.

Fatal weeverfish sting.

We report a case of fatal weeverfish sting. An 18-year-old man was stung on the left leg by a weeverfish, which he was attempting to capture while snorkelling off the coast of Majorca (Spain). The man felt intense pain, but managed to swim to his boat where he lost consciousness after boarding rapidly. An hour later, when examined by a doctor, the subject was found to be in cardiorespiratory arrest. Reanimation manoeuvres were unsuccessful. The most import post-mortem findings were in the skin and lungs. A puncture wound, which traversed the greater saphenous vein and was covered by an intense haemorrhagic infiltrate, was observed in the skin. The lungs showed haemorrhagic alveolar oedema.

Preoperative high-dose cisplatin versus moderate-dose cisplatin combined with ifosfamide and mitomycin in stage IIIA (N2) non small-cell lung cancer: results of a randomized multicenter trial.

Preoperative chemotherapy has become an accepted treatment for stage IIIA (N2) non small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The majority of induction regimens employ cisplatin, although the importance of cis-platin dose in combination is unclear. A randomized trial was conducted to address whether higher pre-operative cisplatin doses result in improved survival and increased pathologic complete response in NSCLC. Patients with stage IIIA clinically enlarged and biopsy-proven N2 lesions were randomly assigned to receive either high-dose cisplatin (HDCP) (100 mg/m2) or moderate-dose cisplatin (MDCP) (50 mg/ m2) in combination with ifosfamide (3 g/m2) and mitomycin (6 mg/m2). Disease was restaged after 3 cycles, and those patients with response or stable disease underwent thoracotomy. From March 1993 to February 1997, 83 patients were randomized: 46 received HDCP, and 37 received MDCP. Clinical characteristics were well matched. Radiographic response rate was 59% for HDCP patients and 30% for MDCP patients (P = 0.01). Thoracotomy was performed in 71 patients (86%), 58 of whom had resectable disease. Complete resection rate was 61% in the HDCP group, and 51% in the MDCP group (P = 0.5). Postoperative mortality was 11%. Pathologic complete response was observed in one patient who received MDCP. Median survival in the HDCP and MDCP groups was 13 and 11 months, respectively (P = 0.3). In conclusion, higher radiographic response rate is observed in patients who receive HDCP, but this study fails to show any significant improvement in either overall survival or pathologic complete response in this group of patients.

Variation in surgical rates: a population study.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare the use of certain surgical services by physicians to three other professional groups (architects, lawyers, and nurses) and to the general population. To meet this objective, variations in six surgical procedures were studied: appendectomy, tonsillectomy, herniorrhaphy, cholecystectomy, cesarean section, and hysterectomy. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in the city of Valencia (Spain) from September 1992 to September 1993. The surveys were carried out by mail questionnaire. Two thousand ninety-six subjects were recruited by simple random sampling for each of the groups. The questionnaire contained questions referring to the interviewee and to each family member (spouse or partner and up to a maximum of four children). The proportion of subjects who stated that they had undergone a particular type of surgery was compared among the professional groups. The population denominator was the whole Valencia population. RESULTS: The global response rate was 83.7%. With the exception of herniorrhaphy, the rates of surgical procedures obtained for each procedure for the different groups were not significantly different. The frequency of operations for each group differed according to sex and age. The risk of undergoing tonsillectomy was significantly higher among the general population when there were no medical friends or relatives than when there were. CONCLUSIONS: Barriers against access to surgical care did not seem to have played an important role in the use of surgical services. The frequency of operations for the best informed consumers with the most access to these services, that is, physicians, was very similar to that for other population groups.

Loss maternally derived measles immunity in Argentinian infants.

BACKGROUND: Measles immunization of children at 1 year of age with a single dose of the current vaccine has successfully reduced measles incidence in Argentina. However, the optimal schedule of measles vaccination of young infants would balance the risk of early loss of maternal antibody in the majority of infants with the risk of primary vaccine failure because of passive measles immunity. This study is the first to document a significant association between loss of passive measles antibody and age among infants born in 1995 and 1996 in Córdoba City, Argentina. METHODS: This is a seroprevalence study of 340 infants to investigate the duration of transplacentally derived measles antibody, assayed by a neutralization test, during the first 8 months of age in Córdoba City, Argentina. RESULTS: The proportion with detectable neutralizing measles antibodies decreased from 85% at 1 month of age to 8% at 8 months of age. The simple logistic model with age (in weeks) as the only variable showed that the decline in the proportion of infants with a positive antibody titer was sharpest during the second and fifth months of age (6.6 and 6.8% per week during a 4-week period, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that 80% of infants are susceptible to measles infection for at least 3 months before routine immunization at 12 months of age.

Experience of Oncopaz Cooperative Group with oral fluoropyrimidines in tumors of the stomach, lung, head and neck, and breast.

The Oncopaz Cooperative Group designed a chemotherapy regimen to modulate UFT (Tegafur and Uracil) with leucovorin. The regimen consisted of a high intravenous dose of leucovorin, followed by oral UFT and oral leucovorin twice daily for 14 days. Based on the promising results obtained with this regimen in patients with advanced colorectal cancer, the Oncopaz group performed several phase II trials using this combination with other drugs to treat advanced gastric, lung, head and neck, and breast cancers. When combined with etoposide in gastric cancer, the regimen was shown to be active and well tolerated. However, when used with cisplatin to treat non-small cell lung cancer, a low response rate and high toxicity precluded its recommendation for further study. The addition of carboplatin in the treatment of head and neck cancer demonstrated moderate activity with low toxicity. In an ongoing trial of advanced breast cancer, preliminary results indicate that the combination of idarubicin, UFT, and leucovorin is active, with moderate, primarily hematologic toxicity. Trials of new combinations are warranted to take advantage of the pharmacokinetic properties and oral bioavailability of UFT and leucovorin.

The UFT/leucovorin/etoposide regimen for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. Oncopaz Cooperative Group.

Gastric cancer is the most chemosensitive adenocarcinoma among digestive neoplasms. A few years ago, we performed a phase II trial with the FLEP regimen, in which fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin are combined with etoposide and cisplatin (Platinol). This regimen resulted in a 39% response rate and high toxicity. Then we used the combination UFT (tegafur and uracil)/leucovorin/etoposide: UFT 390 mg/m2/day orally on days 1 to 14; leucovorin 500 mg/m2 i.v. day 1, and 15 mg/12 h orally on days 2 to 14; and etoposide 100 mg/m2 i.v. on day 1 and then 200 mg/m2/day orally on days 2 and 3. Forty-six patients received a median of five courses. Five patients (11%) achieved a complete response and 12 (26%) a partial response, for an overall response rate of 37%. The response rate was 50% in patients with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 to 1. Grades 3 to 4 toxicities appeared as follow: 17% of patients had diarrhea, 11% had nausea/vomiting, and 13% of patients had anemia. One patient died of neutropenia and sepsis. The median survival time was 9 months. In summary, UFT/leucovorin/etoposide is effective and moderately toxic in patients with advanced gastric cancer. A new trial with UFT/leucovorin/epirubicin is ongoing.

Treatment of patients with advanced gastric carcinoma with the combination of etoposide plus oral tegafur modulated by uracil and leucovorin. A phase II study of the ONCOPAZ Cooperative Group.

BACKGROUND: Both the biochemical modulation and the continuous administration of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) have achieved promising results in patients with gastric carcinoma. Conversely, several studies on gastric carcinoma have demonstrated that the combination of etoposide (VP-16), leucovorin (LV), and 5-FU (ELF) is efficacious and moderately toxic. UFT is a combination of uracil and tegafur (ftorafur) in a 4:1 molar ratio. It can be administered orally for several weeks, thus stimulating the effects of a continuous infusion of 5-FU. Its combination with LV increased the efficacy of UFT. We conducted a Phase II study on patients with gastric carcinoma using the combination VP-16-LV-UFT. This combination is administered mainly orally (p.o) and could yield a good response rate and low toxicity. METHODS: Forty-six patients with bidimensionally measurable disease were entered into the study. Patients received VP-16 100 mg/m2 IV on Day 1 and 200 mg/ m2 p.o. on Days 2 and 3; LV 500 mg/m2 administered intravenously (i.v.) on Day 1, followed by p.o. LV 15 mg every twelve hours on Days 2 to 14. Patients also received UFT p.o. 390 mg/m2/day on Days 1 to 14. Treatment was repeated every 28 days for a minimum of 3 courses per patient. All courses were given on an outpatient basis. RESULTS: Four patients (9%) had a complete response, and 12 a partial response (26%) for an overall response rate of 35% (95% confidence interval: 22-51%). The median duration of response was 10 months. The median overall survival was 9 months. The main side effects were gastrointestinal. Grade 3 to 4 toxicity was encountered as follows: diarrhea in 17% of the patients, nausea/vomiting in 11%, anemia in 13%, mucositis and leukopenia in 4% each, and thrombocytopenia in 2%. One patient died of sepsis and neutropenia. CONCLUSIONS: VP-16-LV-UFT has an activity comparable to that of other schemes and a low incidence of side effects. Furthermore, since it is administered mainly orally, hospitalization is avoided, which makes this scheme suitable for patients with advanced gastric carcinoma.

Treatment of metastatic malignant melanoma with cisplatin plus tamoxifen.

A phase II study was performed to assess the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of cisplatin (CDDP) and tamoxifen (TAM) in patients with metastatic malignant melanoma (MM). A total of 31 consecutive previously untreated patients with unresectable measurable MM were given 100 mg/m2 CDDP every 21 days and 60 mg TAM every 12 h daily. All courses were given on an outpatient basis. A total of 119 courses of treatment were given. In all, 5 of the 31 patients (16%) had an objective response (95% confidence interval 5.3-34%) and 2 (6%) achieved a clinical complete response. The median duration of response was 7 months. The main side effect was gastrointestinal: 13% of the patients experienced grade 3/4 nausea/vomiting. Hematological or neurological toxicities were mild and rare. In conclusion, the combination CDDP-TAM has limited activity in MM, although its toxicity is tolerable. Our results do not allow us to recommend its use for the treatment of MM.
