The illusory home, or the 24 percent fallacy.

Although many elderly people live for years in nursing homes, death certificates routinely obliterate nursing home residence. Data gathered from records of one proprietary nursing home show that of 128 residents, from 45 percent to 66 percent could be classified as "permanent," depending on the definition. Nevertheless, the death certificates for those 128 residents list the nursing home as the residence for only 24 percent. This article explores that bias.

Testing nursing home iatrogenesis.

Many nursing home residents, admitted for "temporary" stays, are expected to return to the community. To test the notion of iatrogenesis, this research examined the discharge status of "temporary" residents discharged from a proprietary nursing home during the first six years of its operation. The research noted 1) the extent to which those residents did not return home and 2) reasons for their derailment. The results of the research did not support the notion of iatrogenesis. Of 419 residents, seventy-nine were expected to return to the community. Only 16 percent of those seventy-nine did not. Content analysis of histories, moreover, showed that two chose to remain, four had families who declined to fill caregiver roles, and two quickly deteriorated. Even the histories of the five who generally lost the ability to function independently did not suggest institutional life was to blame.

The influence of ionic strength on the binding of a water soluble porphyrin to nucleic acids.

The ionic strength dependences of the binding of tetrakis (4-N-methylpyridyl)porphine (H2TMpyP) to poly(dG-dC) and calf thymus DNA have been determined. For the former system the results are typical of other intercalators, i.e., a plot of log K vs log [Na+] is linear albeit with a slope which suggests that the "effective charge" of the porphyrin is closer to two than the formal charge of +4. For calf thymus DNA, the binding profile is not completely compatible with the predictions of condensation theory. Whereas the avidity of binding does decrease with increasing [Na+] as predicted, of greater interest is the relocation of the porphyrin from GC-rich regions to AT-rich regions as the ionic strength increases.

Inhibition of herpes simplex virus replication by succinyl concanavalin A.

Incubation of herpes simplex virus type 1-infected cells with succinyl-concanavalin A, a derivative of the jack bean lectin concanavalin A, resulted in the decreased production of virus. The mode of inhibition by the lectin was unclear. No effect was apparent on the level of viral DNA synthesis. However, incubation of infected cells with increasing concentrations of the lectin appeared to result in a decrease in the quantity of viral protein produced within the cell. A reduction in the virus titer of 57 to 64% was observed upon direct incubation of extracellular virus in the presence of 50 to 100 micrograms of succinyl-concanavalin A per ml.
