Covalent conjugation of mammalian calmodulin with ubiquitin.

In this paper it is shown that mammalian calmodulin from bovine testis is a substrate for reticulocyte ubiquitin conjugating activity (UCA) forming a 1:1 covalent conjugate between bovine calmodulin and ubiquitin (uCaM). There is an absolute requirement for Ca2+ in the range of approximately 10 microM for ubiquitination of calmodulin to occur. This novel conjugate (uCaM) shows a Ca2+-dependent mobility change in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of SDS, indicating that the calmodulin-ubiquitin conjugate still retains the mobility change of native calmodulin. This conjugation reaction could be of prime importance for the intracellular turnover of calmodulin in the mammalian cell, although it cannot be excluded that the ubiquitin-calmodulin conjugate might in itself be of biological relevance.

The Site of the Inhibition of the Shikimate Pathway by Glyphosate: II. INTERFERENCE OF GLYPHOSATE WITH CHORISMATE FORMATION IN VIVO AND IN VITRO.

In the presence of the nonselective herbicide glyphosate (N-[phosphonomethyl]glycine), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) hypocotyls and cultured cells of Galium mollugo L. accumulate an organic acid, which was identified as shikimate by mass-spectroscopy of its methyl ester. After growth in 0.5 millimolar glyphosate for 10 days, G. mollugo cells contained shikimate in amounts of up to 10% of their dry weight. Synthesis of chorismate-derived anthraquinones in G. mollugo was blocked by glyphosate. Chorismate and o-succinylbenzoate (an anthraquinone precursor) alleviated the inhibition. The conclusion drawn from these experiments, that glyphosate inhibits a step in the biosynthetic sequence from shikimate to chorismate, was substantiated by the finding that glyphosate is a powerful inhibitor of the conversion of shikimate to chorismate in cell-free extracts from Aerobacter aerogenes 62-1.

Finding voices through writing.

Assisting students to find their writing "voices" is another way to emphasize writing as a professional tool for nursing. The author discusses a teaching strategy that required students to write using a variety of styles. Students wrote fables, poetry, and letters, and used other creative writing styles to illustrate their views and feelings on professional nursing issues. Creation of a class book empowered students to see versatility with writing styles can be a powerful communication tool to use with peers, clients, and society.
