Prenatal echographic diagnosis of ovarian cyst in a female fetus.

The Authors have diagnosed in antenatal age, by echogram, an ovarian cyst in a female fetus. After birth the newborn was operated. After laparotomy the surgeons found a cyst of the left ovary with this size: cm 9 x cm 11, whose weight was g 400 and with a liquid content. Therefore the Authors point out the validity of the echography in case of congenital fetal abnormalities.

Ultrasound placental study and fetal lung maturity.

This study was undertaken to ascertain the usefulness of placental development ultrasound study in prediction of RDS. We examined 96 women near term of pregnancy; the accuracy of placental maturity grades in predicting fetal lung maturity was compared with lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio and with clinical development of RDS in the infants. We observed good correlation among ultrasound placental grades and fetal maturity.

'Mu' heavy chain type 'non-excretory' myeloma.

An unusual case of 'non-excretory' myeloma is described in which, using immunofluorescence, only 'mu' heavy chains were detected in almost all bone marrow plasma-cell cytoplasm. Cytoplasmic light chains were completely lacking, and neither monoclonal whole immunoglobulin (Ig) nor free heavy nor light chains were detected in serum and urine, although the clinical and morphological features showed the classical pattern of myeloma. The possible mechanism which could play a role in the disturbance of the Ig-chain secretion observed in this case is discussed.

[HbA2 evaluation: comparison between microchromatography on a DEAE cellulose column and conventional cellulose acetate electrophoresis].

Even if different methods were employed in Hb A2 level detection, so far the borderline values between normal and pathological "range" depend on the different laboratories and techniques. The Authors report here an investigation carried out on Hb A2 levels using two different methods: the chromatographic technique by DEAE cellulose column, and the cellulose acetate electrophoresis. The investigation regards 46 normal and 50 beta-thalassemia obligate carrier samples. The results demonstrate that chromatographic technique provides a lowest misclassification rate with a greater reliability. Therefore the use of the microchromatographic procedure for beta-thalassemia screening is recommended.

The relationship between metoclopramide and milk secretion in puerperium.

The Authors administered Metoclopramide to women in puerperium with poor lactation. An increased lactation and high serum prolactin levels were noted. The administration of this medicine did not provoke any variations in serum T3, T4 and TSh levels. thyroid screening of the treated mothers' babies resulted negative.

Molecular cytogenetics, RFLP analysis and clinical characterization of a de novo trisomy 10p case.

A new case of a de novo trisomy 10cen-->10pter is described. The karyotype was exactly defined by high resolution banding and FISH analysis; the chromosome aberration was of maternal meiotic origin as demonstrated by RFLP analysis. Clinical data are reported and correlated with other trisomy 10p cases from the literature. A critical review of the literature was made to define the phenotype of trisomy 10p syndrome.
