A comparison of delinquent and nondelinquent adolescent psychiatric inpatients.

The psychopathology of 29 delinquent and 25 nondelinquent psychiatrically hospitalized adolescent boys was similarly severe. Similar proportions had hallucinations, delusions, learning disabilities, and evidence of neurological impairment, and over half in each group had been diagnosed as being psychotic. Fire-setting, enuresis, and cruelty to animals did not distinguish the two groups. Significantly more of the delinquents had been psychiatrically hospitalized previously, and significantly more of the delinquents had engaged in violently aggressive acts. The household composition of both groups was similar, but more mothers of delinquents than of nondelinquents had been psychiatrically hospitalized. The authors discuss the issue of the treatment of psychiatrically ill violent adolescents.

Indications and methods for performance of osteoplastic-obliterative frontal sinusotomy with a description of a new method and some remarks upon the present state of the are of external frontal sinus surgery.

The Goodale-Montgomery osteoplastic obliterative frontal sinusotomy has been the ultimate resource in America for the most difficult and intractable cases of frontal sinusitis. This operation respects the integrity of the frontal floor and is based upon a concept with which the author disagrees: that the frontal sinus may be treated as an entity quite separate form the ethmoid. Macbeth, who does not obliterate, avails himself of the excellent transfrontal approach to the ethmosphenoids, but breaches the frontal floor in so doing. American surgeons have not followed his lead. The pros and cons of obliteration are discussed, reviewing relevant clinical and experimental data. The author believes that Macbeth's operation is more rational and effective than Goodale's. In an effort to utilize it and have the benefits of an obliterative technique, he employs a composite fat-fascia lata graft which prevents prolapse of fat down into nose and ethmoid. Three cases are briefly reported.

[EEG findings in 40-60 year old subjects].

Electroencephalographic standard examinations were performed in 170 selected healthy persons aged between 40 and 60 years (average age 49 years). "Ideal Normal Traces" with a regular background Alpha-Activity were registered with only 39 test persons (22.9%). They showed an average frequency of 9.9 c/s and extreme values of 8.6--11.2 c/s. In 35 persons (20.5%) the only outstanding feature was merely a marked discontinuity and a considerable frequency lability of background activity, mostly combined with low voltage and a noticeable beta-waves component. In 17 persons (10%) a diffused increase of the Theta activity was found; the average age of this group was slightly higher (52.9 years) than in the remaining groups. Strongly marked paroxysmal-dysrythmic sequences were noted in 21 Test Persons (12.4%); these were in none of the cases clear sharp waves. In 58 Persons (34.2%) the essentiel changes were observed in the temporal regions being of a slighter nature in 46 persons (27.1%), and in 12 persons (7.1%) of a stronger character, lefthand significantly more frequent than righthand.
