Ethics and the nurse's commitment to political involvement: an educator's perspective on ethics and nursing.

Perioperative nurses concomitantly practice in the legal, moral, ethical, and political domains. Although the domains are often thought of as separate entities they are interwoven in practice. This report uses values as the basis of their interconnectiveness. Ethics and politics are presented as problem solving processes. Specifically, ethics is used to justify moral behavior/conduct and politics to resolve conflicts with perioperative and other health care settings.

Sexual abuse within adult intimate relationships.

An intimate partner's initiation of forced sex may signal the escalation of tyranny in physically abusive relationships and failed plans to obtain mutual consent for sexual intercourse in dating relationships. Providers of obstetric and gynecologic care are in strategic positions for primary detection of and intervention in physical and sexual abuse. To assist nurses with the understanding of women's responses to abuse and to enhance implementation of interventions, this article describes the dynamics of and a process for intervening in such abuses. The dynamics include brief explanations of its insidious development, why women stay, and women's empowerment for coping with physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Beginning with asking about the abuse, the process progresses through short-term goals, safety issues, and intervention techniques.

Using LISREL analysis for drug research.

LISREL Analysis is suggested as a method of modeling relationships among variables to determine causality. LISREL is a computer program that uses a maximum-likelihood procedure to analyze structural equations. The variables in the tested hypotheses can be both directly observed variables and latent variables. LISREL was applied to the findings of a study in drug education research in order to provide a model. The constructed LISREL model was contrasted with the ANOVA-based model. The LISREL had greater explanatory value for dealing with antecedent variables present in complex human health behaviors.

Bridge mentoring: a teaching model.

Bridge Program mentors' simultaneous roles of teacher, role model and counselor carry a heavy burden for the success of the mentoring process. While teaching rudimentary research skills and what to expect from a mentor, the mentor must begin to moderate the use of the authority that is inherent in the teaching role. The management of the role transition process is requisite to whether the mentoring or teaching role dominates. The ambiguities of the mentoring and teaching processes often create pitfalls that hinder the mentor and student commitment to work together. The mentoring process; pitfalls, specifically those related to mentors' cultural backgrounds; and selected mentor-mentee relationship examples are presented.
