The psychosocial implications of hysterectomy.

The psychosocial impact on the patient having a hysterectomy is of prime concern to the nurse. This impact can dramatically influence the entire course of the surgery. Postoperatively, the physical care needed by the patient can over-shadow the psychosocial implications of the surgery: This must not happen. The psychosocial needs of the patient are an integral part of the care plan for the hysterectomy patient. By incorporating these needs into the plan of care, the nurse will meet the total needs of the patient and help her return to life-force equilibrium.

Clinical patient information capture: the Columbia/HCA cancer care database experience.

Development of a cancer care database and interpretation of its contents will provide extensive information about a set of patients with a particular disease. By defining disease by stage, its associated costs of diagnosis, treatment and long term follow-up, patient outcomes and self-reported satisfaction and quality of life, a foundation for disease management evolves. Utilizing documented experience over the continuum of cancer care provides a stronger foundation for standards of care and critical pathway development as well as enhancing risk sharing capabilities in providing care for a set of cancer patients. Extensive data collection and analysis has been identified as the key to successful disease management. With the Columbia/HCA Cancer Care Database and future strategic initiatives, the development of an oncology disease management approach is aggressively moving forward.

Dualistic healthcare markets: the impact of boutique offerings.

The strategy of introducing specialty healthcare services into the global marketplace is timely, as improved techniques and technology enhance existing treatment interventions and populations are demanding increased access and high quality. In dualistic healthcare markets, countries with a national health service and a private sector, opportunities are either available or can be created to introduce boutique offerings either through strategic alliances or independently. The number of companies with a specialty service offering is increasing in healthcare as niche providers attempt to meet the demand for quality, service and accessibility that may be missing in comprehensive providers. The success of specialty companies in the U.S. within the healthcare arena may translate well into the international market if companies are focused and deliberate in their planning and implementation process.

From breast cancer to Comprehensive Women's Center.

A Comprehensive Women's Center (CWC) is a concept designed to enhance the quality of both patient care and the care experience while increasing patient volumes to hospitals by detection of conditions requiring additional diagnostic interventions or therapeutic interventions. Expanding an existing Breast Center into a Comprehensive Women's Center attracts new patients by diversifying services offered from mammography and breast related services alone to providing services such as bone densitometry, cholesterol screening and even children's immunizations. A Comprehensive Women's Center also positions the hospital as the site of choice for women making healthcare decisions. The CWC will enhance the quality of women's health by increasing compliance with screening guidelines through ease of access and quality of services provided.
