Intrapersonal and maternal correlates of aggression, conflict, and externalizing problems in toddlers.

Research has shown that 2-year-olds engage in peer-directed aggression and initiation of conflict. However, there has been little consideration of the factors associated with variability in toddlers' aggression. One hundred and four toddlers (52 females) were observed for 35 min of free play with a same-sex peer, with both mothers present. Experience in early out-of-home care was not related to aggression. Toddlers' observed and mother-rated dysregulated temperament, and mothers' use of warmth and negative dominance during interactions with their children, were used to predict toddlers' aggression and maternal ratings of externalizing difficulties. Boys were observed to be more aggressive than girls. Regression analyses showed that, after controlling for main effects, the interaction of child gender, temperament, and maternal negative dominance predicted both outcomes. Observed aggression and mother-reported externalizing problems were associated significantly with dysregulated temperament only for boys with mothers who demonstrated relatively high levels of negative dominance.

The functional role of exercise in the development of weight and diet concerns in women.

The functional role of exercise in the development of weight preoccupation and body dissatisfaction was examined. One hundred and twelve females, identified as regular participants in exercise programmes, completed an inventory that provided information on attitudes, behaviours and psychological characteristics related to dieting and weight-control, as well as a self-report of physical activity. A structural equation model was tested that provides support for the notion that Body Mass Index, emotional reactivity and physical activity have statistically significant direct effects on weight and diet concerns, but that weight and diet concerns do not predict the degree of participation in physical activity. Significant differences in eating disorder indicators were found between sub-groups identified as 'constantly dieting' and 'rarely dieting'. The tentative, but important, conclusion was drawn that regular participation in a fitness programme may be causally related to excessive concern with weight and dieting.

Multidisciplinary team interaction: summary and Action Plan.

INTRODUCTION: Multidisciplinary team interaction has become a commonplace phrase in the discussion of disaster response. Theme 6 explored multidisciplinary team interactions and attempted to identify some of the key issues and possible solutions to the seemingly intractable problems inherent in this endeavour. METHODS: Details of the methods used are provided in the introductory paper. The Cochairs moderated all presentations and produced a summary that was presented to an assembly of all of the delegates. The Cochairs then presided over a workshop that resulted in the generation of a set of Action Plans that then were reported to the collective group of all delegates. RESULTS: Main points developed during the presentations and discussion included: (1) promotion of multidisciplinary collaboration, (2) standardization, (3) the Incident Command System, (4) professionalism, (5) regional disparities, and (6) psychosocial impact. DISCUSSION: Action plans recommended: (1) a standardized template for Needs Assessment be developed, implemented, and applied using collaboration with international organizations, focusing on needs and criteria appropriate to each type of event, and (2) team needs assessments be recognized for local responses and for determination of when international assistance may be required, for planning a command system, and for evaluating the psychosocial impact. CONCLUSIONS: There is a clear need for the development of standardized methods for the assessment of needs, development and implementation of a command structure, and for appreciation of regional differences and the psychosocial impact of all interventions.
