The assessment and treatment of deaf children with psychiatric disorders.
The assessment and treatment of deaf children with psychiatric disorder is intimately related to the individual child's communication, which in turn is affected by a number of factors, medical, social, and cultural. The deafness can be aetiologically related to the psychiatric disorder or can be incidental. Treatment strategies should be adapted to meet the individual child and family's needs. Deaf professionals have a vital role in mental health services for this population. The use of an interpreter can clarify communication and cultural issues for deaf and hearing children, families, and professionals.

Psychiatric aspects of hearing impairments.
Hearing impairment is a multifaceted condition with medical, social and cultural aspects. Children with hearing impairments follow many different developmental pathways, some growing up to join the Deaf community. Children with fluctuating hearing impairments are at greater risk of behavioural problems and language and reading delay. Children with permanent hearing impairment experience the same range of mental health problems as hearing children but their presentation, treatment and outcome can differ because of differences in communication and language use.

Interviewing deaf children, the interviewer effect: a research note.
A highly structured diagnostic interview, the Child Assessment Schedule (CAS), was used to investigate the influence of the interviewer's signing ability and cultural status on the outcome of psychiatric assessments of signing deaf children and adolescents. Preliminary findings suggest that linguistic competence of the interviewer had a significant effect on the range of symptoms elicited at interview. In particular that poor competence leads to the masking of a child's emotional difficulties.
