We compared the incidence of nontraumatic lower extremity amputations in the diabetic and nondiabetic populations in New Jersey. The diabetes-related lower extremity amputation rate was 80.1/10,000 diabetic population, while the rate for nondiabetes-related amputations was 1.6/10,000 population.
Five roving symposia series directed to primary care physicians addressing the complications of diabetes were designed, implemented, and evaluated. These roving symposia effectively reached physicians statewide and appeared to influence positive practice behaviors.
