Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the determination of protein-A.

A competitive ELISA for the determination of protein-A concentration in culture supernatants is described. The sensitivity of the assay is 50 ng/ml and it may be used to determine concentrations of protein-A up to 1000 ng/ml. The assay is specific, rapid and suitable for routine screening of protein-A producing microorganisms.

A convenient procedure for the estimation of cellulase activity.

The extent of clarification of cellulose-containing agar by "complete' cellulase is a linear function of the logarithm of the enzyme activity. This fact allows a convenient and quantitative estimation of cellulase activity in culture filtrates to be made without the need for tedious dilution. Moreover, such activity can be determined even in the presence of inhibitors such as cellobiose.

Sodium appetite in sheep induced by cerebral ventricular infusion of angiotensin: comparison with sodium deficiency.

Intraventricular administration of supraphysiological amounts of renin, nerve growth factor preparation, or angiotensin II greatly increased the consumption of water and hypertonic sodium bicarbonate solution by sheep. These effects were antagonized by intraventricular administration of drugs that prevent the formation of angiotensin II or block its receptors. The fact that these angiotensin-blocking drugs did not change the sodium intake of sodium-deficient sheep challenges the idea that central angiotensin action is involved in sodium appetite due to a deficiency.

Ethylene production by soil microorganisms.

Ethylene-producing strains of Penicillium cyclopium and P. crustosum were isolated from soil. These isolates produced ethylene on a variety of carbon growth substrates including phenolic acids. The quantities of ethylene produced on the various substrates varied, and the subtrate-ethylene prosuction pattern for P. cyclopium strains differed significantly from that of P. crustosum strains.
