Caring for the community: development of the advanced practice nurse role.

In a collaborative effort with a large metropolitan hospital in Boston, a community assessment was conducted to determine ways in which an advanced practice nurse (APN) could enhance delivery to a nearby small urban community. The authors attended healthcare delivery meetings, interviewed community leaders, visited various community sites, and became familiar with the community and its residents. The assessment included evaluation with proposed intervention strategies, development of a model for enhancing delivery of care based on Orem's Self-Care Theory, and a role description for an APN that incorporated collaboration between the APN and the community health nurse. A community assessment enabled the APN to become a vital healthcare leader.

Urinary incontinence: steps to evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.

In this era of rapid, scientific medical advances, we still live with the myth that urinary incontinence should be accepted as a normal part of aging. Urinary incontinence, however, should not be considered a disease but rather a symptom or sign of an underlying problem. Patients with urinary incontinence now have many places to turn for advice and medical treatment. In addition to urologists, gynecologists, and geriatricians, nurses are actively involved in the evaluation and management of patients with urinary incontinence. The purpose of this article is to outline a systematic nursing approach to the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with urinary incontinence in an office setting.

Microscopy in solid state science.

The Microstructural Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory is actively involved in a considerable number of research projects which cover a broad range of materials science. In this paper, we describe briefly several such projects, with particular emphasis given to the application of parallel-detection electron energy loss spectroscopy (PEELS) on a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to the analysis of materials such as stainless steels, catalysts, and high temperature superconductors. In addition, we describe a number of related projects that are currently being carried out in the group, particularly those which utilise and develop novel STEM imaging and analytical techniques.
