Local electronic structure of near oxygen dopants: a window on the high-Tc pairing mechanism.

The cuprate material (Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O-2212) is believed to be doped by a combination of cation switching and excess oxygen. The interstitial oxygen dopants are of particular interest because scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments have shown that they are positively correlated with the local value of the superconducting gap, and calculations suggest that the fundamental attraction between electrons is modulated locally. In this work, we use density functional theory to try to ascertain which locations in the crystal are energetically most favorable for the O dopant atoms, and how the surrounding cage of atoms deforms. Our results provide support for the identification of STM resonances at -1 with dopant interstitial O atoms, and show how the local electronic structure is modified nearby.

0-pi transitions in Josephson junctions with antiferromagnetic interlayers.

We show that the dc Josephson current through superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor (S-AF-S) junctions manifests a remarkable atomic-scale dependence on the interlayer thickness. At low temperatures the junction is either a 0 or pi junction depending on whether the AF interlayer consists of an even or odd number of atomic layers. This is associated with different symmetries of the AF interlayers in the two cases. In the junction with odd AF interlayers an additional pi- 0 transition can take place as a function of temperature. This originates from the interplay of spin-split Andreev bound states. Experimental implications of these theoretical findings are discussed.

Andreev states near short-ranged pairing potential impurities.

We study Andreev states near atomic scale modulations in the pairing potential in both s- and d-wave superconductors with short coherence lengths. For a moderate reduction of the local gap, the states exist only close to the gap edge. If one allows for local sign changes of the order parameter, however, resonances can occur at energies close to the Fermi level. The local density of states (LDOS) around such pairing potential defects strongly resembles the patterns observed by tunneling measurements around Zn impurities in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO). We discuss how this phase impurity model of the Zn LDOS pattern can be distinguished from other proposals experimentally.

Dopant-modulated pair interaction in cuprate superconductors.

A comparison of recent experimental STM data with single-impurity and many-impurity Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations strongly suggests that random out-of-plane dopant atoms in cuprates modulate the pair interaction locally. This type of disorder is crucial to understanding the nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity observed in BSCCO-2212, and can reproduce observed correlations between the positions of impurity atoms and various aspects of the local density of states such as the gap magnitude and the height of the coherence peaks. Our results imply that each dopant atom modulates the pair interaction on a length scale of order one lattice constant.

Spin-dependent quasiparticle reflection and bound States at interfaces with itinerant antiferromagnets.

We find a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection from the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet (AF) on a bipartite lattice. Low-energy quasiparticles in a normal metal (N) experience spin-dependent retroreflection at AF/N interfaces. As a combined effect of antiferromagnetic and Andreev reflections, subgap Andreev states arise at an AF/superconductor (SC) interface. When the antiferromagnetic reflection dominates the specular one, Andreev bound states have almost zero energy on AF/s-wave superconductor (sSC) interfaces, whereas there are no low-energy subgap states on AF/d-wave superconductor (dSC) boundaries. For an sSC/AF/sSC junction, the bound states are found to split, due to the finite width of the AF interlayer, and carry the supercurrent. The theory developed in the present Letter is based on a novel quasiclassical approach, which applies to interfaces involving itinerant antiferromagnets.

Relaxation of hot quasiparticles in a d-wave superconductor.

Motivated by recent pump-probe experiments we consider the processes by which "hot" quasiparticles produced near the antinodes of a d-wave superconductor can relax. We show that in a large region of momentum space processes which break Cooper pairs are forbidden by energy and momentum conservation. Equilibration then occurs by scattering with thermal quasiparticles: Umklapp scattering is exponentially suppressed at low temperatures, but small-angle scattering leads to power-law behavior. By solving the Boltzmann equation analytically we make detailed predictions for the temperature and intensity dependence of these processes, which we compare with experiment.

Singular current response from isolated impurities in d-wave superconductors.

The current response of a d-wave superconductor containing a single impurity is calculated and shown to be singular in the low-temperature limit, leading in the case of strong scattering to a 1/T term in the penetration depth lambda(T) similar to that induced by Andreev surface bound states. For a small number of such impurities, we argue this low-T upturn could be observable in cuprate superconductors.

Optical and thermal-transport properties of an inhomogeneous d-wave superconductor.

We calculate transport properties of disordered 2D d-wave superconductors from solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, and show that weak localization effects give rise to a finite-frequency peak in the optical conductivity similar to that observed in experiments on disordered cuprates. At low energies, order parameter inhomogeneities induce linear and quadratic temperature dependencies in microwave and thermal conductivities respectively, and appear to drive the system towards a quasiparticle insulating phase.

Nesting symmetries and diffusion in disordered d-wave superconductors.

The low-energy density of states (DOS) of disordered 2D d-wave superconductors is extremely sensitive to details of both the disorder model and the electronic band structure. Using diagrammatic methods and numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations, we show that the physical origin of this sensitivity is the existence of a novel diffusive mode with momentum close to (pi,pi) which is gapless only in systems with a global nesting symmetry. We find that in generic situations the DOS vanishes at the Fermi level. However, proximity to the highly symmetric case may nevertheless lead to observable nonmonotonic behavior of the DOS in the cuprates.

Observability of quantum phase fluctuations in cuprate superconductors.

We study the order parameter phase fluctuation effects in cuprate superconductors near T = 0, using a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave BCS model. An effective phason theory is obtained which is used to estimate the strength of the fluctuations, the fluctuation correction to the in-plane penetration depth, and the pair-field susceptibility. We find that, while the phase fluctuation effects are difficult to observe in the renormalization of the superfluid phase stiffness, they may be observed in a pair tunneling experiment which measures the pair-field susceptibility.
