Structures of nucleobases trapped within Au triangles and its effects on hydrogen bonding in base pairs of DNA.

Nucleobases (adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G)) trapped within two metal clusters such as Au(3) undergo expansion. Our investigation reveals that this primarily arises due to the concomitant increase in all the bond lengths in molecules. Such expansion of the molecules can be qualitatively understood on the basis of classical harmonic potentials in the bonds and loss of aromaticity in the rings. Specifically, the highly electronegative O and N elements in the base pairs anchor to Au atoms and form X-Au bonds, which leads to charge redistribution within the molecules. As a very important consequence of this, the nature of the hydrogen bonds (in Au(3)-A...T-Au(3) and in Au(3)-G...C-Au(3)) change substantially within these electrodes in comparison to gas-phase structures. These hydrogen bonds have a single-well potential energy profile (of the type N...H...O and N...H...N) instead of double-well potentials (like N-H...O or N-H...N/ N...H-N types). A detailed energy calculation along the proton movement pathway supports our conclusions.

Natural spermatoceles in irreversible obstructive azoospermia--reservoirs of viable spermatozoa for assisted conception.

Fine needle aspiration of asymptomatic spermatoceles detected in five men with obstructive azoospermia was evaluated as a minimally invasive method of sperm retrieval for assisted conception. Sperm preparations adequate for in-vitro fertilization were initially obtained from three men, but there was failure of fertilization in all three cycles. However, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in three couples resulted in fertilization of 58% of metaphase II oocytes, with embryo transfers in five of six cycles. A successful pregnancy and delivery resulted from spermatozoa from a man with an irreversible vasectomy, for whom previous epididymal microaspiration and ICSI had been unsuccessful. Spermatoceles were found in 4% of men with irreversible obstructive azoospermia referred for assisted conception. These patients should therefore be examined very carefully for small cysts near the epididymis, because fine needle aspiration, usually without anaesthesia, can instantly locate a ready source of viable spermatozoa for ICSI. This is less invasive than the alternative sperm retrieval procedures, which are more traumatic and require local or general anaesthesia.

The effect of maternal employment on Mormon and non-Mormon adolescents.

The relationship between maternal employment and familial relations was investigated in two groups of adolescents. Samples of Mormon and non-Mormon adolescents whose mothers either worked full-time or were nonemployed were compared on a series of questionnaire items designed to assess general family climate and quality of relationships with parents. Results indicated that both sons and daughters from Mormon families where the mother was not employed full-time reported a closer relationship with their fathers.
