Dental acrylic resin radiopacity: literature review and survey of practitioners' attitudes.

This study was initiated to ascertain the existence and some specifics of medical problems caused by traumatic ingestion/aspiration of fragments of radiolucent dental prostheses, and to evaluate opinions of radiopacity inclusion. A survey of 50 United States departments of oral surgery and emergency medicine yielded a 60% response. Results indicated that such medical problems are seen and would be reduced by incorporation of radiopaque materials. However, current technology cannot produce clinically acceptable levels of radiopacity without degrading physical and esthetic properties of the acrylic resin.

An impression technique to make a new master cast for an existing removable partial denture.

When the master cast for a removable partial denture is lost and a well-fitting framework remains, it may be necessary to replace the master cast. A two-step impression procedure is described that combines the altered-cast technique and the use of a modified disposable tray. Finger pressure is maintained on the major connector throughout the making of both impressions, to prevent framework movement and loss of contact with prepared rest seats.

A surgical guide for implant placement.

Mounted diagnostic casts aid in determining whether sufficient space exists for a fixed cantilevered implant prosthesis. These casts are also used to construct a surgical guide. Such a technique is described.

Porcelain-metal pontics for removable partial dentures.

A custom-made porcelain-fused-to-metal ring pontic for a removable partial denture may be color characterized and glazed by use of familiar procedures. The use of this type of pontic on removable partial dentures has the potential of superior esthetic results when replacing isolated maxillary anterior teeth.

Fabrication of custom trays from existing dentures.

This technique rapidly and simply provides a custom tray which duplicates the tissue surface of the patient's previous denture. The custom tray is then used as if it were the denture in a reline technique to make a final impression.
