Isolation and characterization of Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin A binding glycoprotein from mouse LM cells.

A Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin A (PE) binding glycoprotein was affinity purified from toxin sensitive mouse LM cells. The binding protein was solubilized with Triton X-100 or Nonidet P-40 and purified on a PE-Sepharose affinity column. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis yielded a single band with an estimated molecular mass of greater than 300,000 Da. N-Linked carbohydrate was present, accounting for approximately 10% of the total mass of the molecule. The purified protein specifically bound PE. Incubation of purified protein specifically bound PE. Incubation of purified PE binding protein with toxin reduced toxicity to LM cells. We speculate on the role of this toxin binding glycoprotein in the intoxication process.

[Uterine metastasis of breast cancer. Report of 8 cases].

The authors report a retrospective clinicopathologic study of 8 cases of uterine metastases from breast cancer. This is the largest surgical series dealing with this subject to be published to date. Not autopsy case has been considered. Much information has come out of this analysis and out of the international literature review: secondary location in the uterus can occur many years after the diagnosis and treatment of primary cancer of the breast; infiltration of the endometrium appears as common as infiltration of the myometrium; the histological type is nearly always invasive lobular carcinoma. The later was found in seven out of eight cases; the evaluation of hormone receptor levels in the surgical specimens has shown that most breast cancers metastasizing to the uterus are hormone-dependent.

[Post-menopausal endometriosis developed during tamoxifen treatment].

The authors report a case of endometriosis (adenomyosis + endometrioma) which occurred in a female patient aged 69 years, who had undergone the menopause 15 years previously and who had been taking Tamoxifen for 7 years as an adjuvant treatment for cancer of the breast. Tamoxifen, a non-steroidal anti-estrogen derived from diethylstilbestrol, has a variable antagonist/agonist so that estrogenic stimulation of the female genital tract may occur, particularly of the endometrial mucosa. The reactivation of the endometriosic foci which had become quiescent under the impact of the natural menopause, which, by iatrogenic analogy is included in the series of paradoxical uterine effects of tamoxifen.

[Plateau wave, unexpected cause of anoxo-ischemic syncope. Reflections on the pathogenesis of the plateau wave apropos of a case].

The case of a 56 year old female suffering from a carcinomatous meningitis with recurrent attacks of unconciousness is presented. The ischemic nature of the attacks was substantiated through a simultaneous recording of ICP, systemic arterial blood pressure, and EEG. Every syncope was clearly accompanied by 1) a typical ICP plateau-wave, 2) a systemic blood pressure wave of lower amplitude, 3) a considerable correlative diminution of the cerebral perfusion pressure and 4) a slowing down of the EEG. These phenomenons could be provoked by intraventricular injections of a few milliliters of artificial CSF, whereas a ventriculo-peritoneal shunting made them disappeared. The role played by the disturbances of the CSF flow in the production of the plateau waves is discussed.

[Pacemaker-Twiddler's Syndrome (author's transl)].

A case of Pacemaker-Twiddler's Syndrome is presented. Rotation of a permanent pacemaker can result in a capstan effect, and the lead is drawn out of the right ventricle. Fixing thouroughly the pacemaker and the lead should be an useful prophylactic measure.
