[Polypous nonchromaffin paraganglioma of the stomach].

It is reported on the unusual position of a nonchromaffin paraganglioma in the stomach, which in gastroscopy imposed as polyp and was removed. On the basis of the light-microscopic picture, its behaviour during staining and the electronmicroscopic investigations the tumour is classified in the group of the paragangliomata. Since there are no unequivocal histological criteria of malignity, on account of the well-known slow growth of these tumour only the polyp is removed.

Diagnosis, Differential

[Monitoring of the clinical and morphological course of glomerulonephritis].

It is reported on the clinical and morphological course of 50 patients with glomerulonephritis. The period of observation extended from 6 months to 10 years. The judgment of the clinical and morphological course was done on the basis of the laboratory findings or by means of the control biopsy. In the period of observation 36 patients were treated with different medicaments, whereas 14 patients were observed without treatment. A positive success of the therapy could not be recognized in the group of patients described the clinical and morphological course in the patients is described and the author adopts a definite attitude to the necessity of control biopsies.

[Determination of the width of the synaptic cleft in PWS-contrasted rat brain material].

Based on a simple model of the synaptic cleft, some of those procedures that render possible an appraisal of the cleft width starting from cuttings as seen in micrographs are described in this paper. The results of the investigation prove that contrary to figures published previously by other authors, the width of the synaptic cleft is not constant, but exhibits a frequency distribution with a maximum - to - minimum ratio of about ten. Relative frequency in per cent can be approximately expressed as follows: p = 7.7 + 4.1 n with n = 1, 2, 5 ordinal class numbers of cleft width and the according class mid-points 7.62n nm Typflying of synapses according to physiological points of view has turned out to be out of reach.

[The cervical cycle as shown on the example of morphological examinations in pregnancy with special reference to subcylindrical vacuolization].

Cyclic alterations of the endometrium are known for certain, but similar processes of the mucous membrane of the uterine cervix are vague. In pregancy there is a considerable increase in secretion. The epithelium of surface and glands becomes stratified and the nuclei of cylindrical epithelial cells withdraw from the base of the cells and often originate retronuclear vacuols. From these vacuols one has to distinguish so-called subcylindrical vacuols which only appear during pregnancy. They are seen between epithelium and basal membrane. Electron microscopical investigations show the vacuols lined partly by atrophical partly bysecretory cylindrical cells. Histochemically the contents of the vacuols are similar to the cytoplasm of cylindrical cells and the contents of glands. These alterations of the cervical mucous membrane are dependent on hormonal stimulation and in conclusion it must be possible to demonstrate the hormonal situation andits disturbances by investigations of the mucous membrane of the cervix uteri.

Cervix Uteri

[Synapse density determination in brain structures based on phosphotungstic acid contrast].

Using the E-PTA procedure of Aghajanian and Bloom we determined the numerical density of synapses in the stratum lacunosun-modeculare of the CA1-region in the hippocampus of male albino rats. On this occasion the sources of error both the natural and the methodical were investigated. As natural causes of remarkable scattering and failing correspondence in the findings the individual variability of the synaptic density and the inhomogeneous distribution of synapses must be taken into consideration. Concerning the methodical sources of error the differences in tissue shrinkage become apparent. But faults resulting from applying morphometric methods are the most serious. The counting of synaptic profiles is based on defined morphological criteria. The portion of the synaptic profiles recorded in this way in relation to all those present in the section depends beside other things on the section thickness. Accordingly the correction factors are in correlation with section thickness. The application of the Floderus correction presupposes the determination of the minimum length of the counted profiles. As a result of these investigated the possibilities for reducing the error have been demonstrated.
