Orthopedic splint diagnostic system and fabrication.

This chapter presents a method of measuring casts in a scientifically duplicatable manner, using the orthopedic relator to diagnose the plane of occlusion. This allows the practitioner to determine if occlusal equilibration is a viable treatment modality for a particular patient. For patients who do not meet the criteria for occlusal equilibration, a detailed technique for correcting the occlusal plane discrepancies through use of the orthopedic splint is presented.

The undesirable effects of various changes of monoplane occlusion on complete denture retention.

The most commonly seen undesirable alterations to the occlusal plane, when using monoplane occlusion with nonanatomic teeth, have been outlined verbally and graphically. The introduction of dislodging forces to denture retention brought about by these variations in the monoplane have been examined, as well as methods for their correction. The order of presentation of undesirable alterations to the occlusal plane is a guide for a step-by-step correction of these changes. It provides the practitioner with a sequential checklist for correcting undesirable occlusal changes in monoplane denture occlusion with nonanatomic teeth.

Impression technique for denture reconstruction.

The advent of tissue conditioning materials has made possible a new method for recording functional impressions for denture reconstruction using the patient's existing dentures as impression trays. The criteria by which the suitability of existing dentures for use in the technique are set out in detail. A particular feature of the method is the physiological recording of the post palatal seal area using Iowa wax and its incorporation into the entire maxillary impression. The advantages of the technique include the possibility of recording the tissues under physiological displacement resulting from normal function over a prolonged period rather than at the moment of final setting of conventional impression materials.

Traditional and orthopedic relator systems for constructing dentures with monoplane occlusion.

Two sets of complete dentures with monoplane occlusion were constructed for each of eight patients. One set was made by using techniques and protocols of traditional systems; the other was constructed with the technology of the Orthopedic Relator. Using the Orthopedic Relator system reduced the number of separate steps required and provided greater standardization than was possible with traditional techniques.
